You may have a corrupted WINDOWS registry. It's advisable not to fiddle with it if you don't know what to do. Even if you do, it's still risky business.
Has the software ever worked or did you get this error straight away? If you only installed it just now and got the error, do an uninstall of PI, delete the TEmp files and program folder and revert back to a restore point prior to the installation of PI and your attempt to fix the registry.
Reinstall PI and see what happens. If it does not fix your problem you could try a repair installation of WIN XP.

Have you tried reinstalling the program? Try uninstalling the software from the Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs. But before you do so, make sure to clean or delete files on the Temp folders.
When you install a software, the installer extracts temporary files needed for the installation on a temp folder. These folders are usually:
C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Local Settings\Temp
If the temp folder holds old installer files that may be corrupted or are duplicates with the same filename but are used for a different software, it could cause a problem for your new installation of the software. Before you reinstall the software, make sure to clean the Temp folders.
The "Local Settings" folder is a hidden folder so you have to enable Windows Explorer to see hidden files and folders. Open "Windows Explorer", go to "Tools > Folder Options > View" and check "show hidden files and folders". You can now open the Temp folder from the "Documents and Settings" folder and delete the files there before you make a new install.
