rotate video from mobilephone - tiny
Newbee. Just bought Corel VideoStudio X8.5 and is already lost on a very simple task (I think)
I captured a video on my phone (1920x1080). Added the video to the timeline. I have rotated the video 90 deg. from 1080x1920 to 1920x1080 (video options).
Now the video i the preview is very little with BIG borders both on top and sides. See the pic attached (with distort turn on).
What to do?
I've googled it and tried 'cropping' with no luck. Also tried playing with the 'Distort Clip' option but the aspect ratio seems locked.

Re: rotate video from mobilephone - tiny
well you say distort is on - but did you then manually distort (or enlarge) the image by moving those yellow squares with your mouse
Re: rotate video from mobilephone - tiny
Yes I have. But if I move the yellow dots left/right it just stretches the video. If I move up/down just make the video flat - the black borders stays. If I do it from the corners, the video just get smaller.
It's problably a nobrainer if your know what to do. I spent 2 hours last night trying to solve it by my self and google. Eventually I gave up and posted this thread
I have an okay understanding for photo editing (photoshop) but rotate in video editing do clearly not work the same easy way.

Have you tried moving the clip down into one of the overlay tracks - it is sometimes easier to change the image size there

Hi
Your video does seem to contain black borders but you should be able to re-size the frame by dragging the corners will retain the proportions.
You will have to drag the entire frame diagonally to get hold of the corners.
Then right click and Anchor center center
Or try right click – Fit to Width then drag top and bottom to remove the border
However you should record the original video using the phone in landscape not portrait mode.
Then the recorded video should be correct 16:9 not 9:16

I have never understood why people use their phones vertically (portrait mode) when all video screens are horizontal (landscape mode)

Brian, it's because people use their phones while standing but watch TV while sittingBrianCee wrote:I have never understood why people use their phones vertically (portrait mode) when all video screens are horizontal (landscape mode)

Re: rotate video from mobilephone - tiny
Hi Brian
I guess we use the phone vertically (in portrait mode) to make the calls, its second nature to hold the phone that way
The phone could flag a warning as to the aspect of the phone when recording video.

Re: rotate video from mobilephone - tiny
There are of course some smartphones at the expensive end of the market which allow you to use the camera in portrait mode, but internally switches to landscape mode for the actual filming -- even though the owner isn't aware of it. So with those phones, this problem does not exist...

Re: rotate video from mobilephone - tiny
Thanks for answers but have not solved it yet.
I have attached a short video with same problem so you can test it youself in VideoStudio. Rotate it from 1080x1920 to 1920x1080 and export. I really want to learn how you do that.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/xeyqgk9uq16je ... 6.mp4?dl=1 (5MB)
I really don't understand why VideoStudio not automatic change the Project from 1080x1920 to 1920x1080 when I rotate the video. But I'm a noob so someday I might understand
Fit to with and then drag top/bottom just flattens the video. The big top/bottom bordes are still there.
Drag diagonally resize the video but also resize the black borders.

Yes, does not seem to helpBrianCee wrote:Have you tried moving the clip down into one of the overlay tracks - it is sometimes easier to change the image size there
Actually I did record in landscape but for some reason my phone did not detect it (it usually does)BrianCee wrote:I have never understood why people use their phones vertically (portrait mode) when all video screens are horizontal (landscape mode)
Thanks, I've also seen this answer written elsewhere. Though I can't get it to work - I might do it the wrong way.lata wrote:Hi

Re: rotate video from mobilephone - tiny
VS is not perfect as you found out, many of it's core engine stuff relay on more than 10 years old "ideas"
Who thought about vertical video back than????
--- At the moment my initial solution is to apply rotate via motion. than you can copy and paste (select only the last attribute option) this to all your clips
be careful to apply to ALL KEYFRAMES

Re: rotate video from mobilephone - tiny
I put your video clip in the timeline - rotated it and applied the 'cropping' FX (not crop borders)
then just pulled it to fit the screen
when the yellow boxes get to the edge of the window put your cursor onto the image and slide it off the edge of the screen until you can pull the image again - I got this :-

Re: rotate video from mobilephone - tiny
It's crazy, I was able to get the clip right with no motion or FX and I can't replicate that again.
It was the order I applied the overlay options that worked
Stay tuned
** Ok try this
1) clip on overlay
2) Fit to width
3) Rotate.
Well 1,3,2 will also work

Re: rotate video from mobilephone - tiny
Hi
Your video file is using these properties, as seen by CVSX8
NTSC non-drop frame (30 fps)
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1080 x 1920, 30.013 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 17071 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 128 Kbps
Yes the frame size seems the wrong aspect should be 1920 x 1080,
Ok this is what I did....
1 /
I set the Project Properties to use :-
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 30 fps (Note the frame aspect)
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 17000 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 256 Kbps
2 / I Imported the video to the top track, but overlay track would also work.
3 / Double click the timeline clip to open the options panel
4 / Edit tab, rotate frame Left (icon below digital clock)
5 / Attributes Tab – Preview screen shows frame highlighted. (If using top track , first tick Distort).
6 / Right Click Preview window frame and choose Fit to Width.
Video should fill screen
7 / Share Same as Project Settings , should produce a good video.

Re: rotate video from mobilephone - tiny
For me the clip plays in the Landscape mode in VLC and in WMP. Quicktime plays it in the Portrait mode.
When I load it into Roxio Creator it loads in the Landscape mode.
Looking at the properties of the clip using MediaInfo it shows it as 1920x1080, ie the Landscape mode. The data also shows that it has been rotated by 90 degrees. It seems that VS (and QuickTime) does not read the clip properties correctly.
