I am editing a tif file exported from Aftershot Pro with size 5616x3744. It is excruciatingly slow even for simple operations like Levels, Curves and Mask creation. Brush is laggy as well. Am I doing something wrong? If I export to png and perform the edit, can I apply those edits to my tif file?
This is on a Windows 10 64-bit with 16G of RAM, 4-core i5.

Just curious, are you using the 64-bit version of PSP or the 32-bit version? I realize it's a bit nitpicky but want to check. Technically PSP does slow down with larger image sizes like you talk about. Some options to try include turning off the scratch disk, and decreasing the number of Undos allowed inside PSP. These elements take up more and more memory as you use PSP. You can find these under File -> Preferences -> General Preferences.

I am using PSP 64-bit. It doesn't have the 32-bit icon at the bottom right of the logo and the window title does say 64-bit. I guess I could turn off scratch disk but since it writes to my SSD, I don't know if that is the problem.

I'm using x7 on a i5, 64 bit Win7 machine. 8 gig ram. 6000x4000 tiffs with multiple layers. 500+ meg. Unless I have something running in the back ground most functions are all most instant. (Saving is the exception. Strange thing is an older 32 bit machine with 4 gig runs just as fast).
Look for a computer issue rather than a PSP issue.

I notice the auto-save causes the biggest delay. Other than that, brush movement is not instantaneous but choppy. i.e. I move the brush, then the brush will draw underneath in half a second or more.

Slow brush movement can be an issue. I've found that keeping a relatively small brush size helps. Also keep your steps set at 1.
But most importantly check that you haven't got something running in the background.
