Optimising for YouTube uploads/file size

Post by MikesMovies »

Hi everyone

Ref: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en

I have been looking at Studio X8s settings trying to get as close to what YouTube recommended as possible.
I have settled on a bit rate of 10000 which is 2k higher then the min the ask for and produces nice file sizes at my current work rate.
Using the MP4 container I can't get the audio bitrate wanted 384kbps, best I can get is 256?

Under video codec:H264 I can't find anything other than the 'high profile' setting.

Has anyone managed to find a custom setting that gets as close as possible to YouTube's request?

Thanks.
Kind regards from Mike in Sussex UK

Mike, check out my tutorial on installing the Xvid codec: 09: VS 11/11.5: Encoding in Xvid MPEG-4. It's a bit dated, but should still be valid. If you have any questions, let me know and I'll help as much as I can.

Hi there, many thanks.

I followed it as closely as I could allowing for the updates within the xvid pack and VS X8 that I am using.
Profile manager etc.
I could not set the audio as described, so left it PCM.
Sadly nothing can play the outputted file?

Why do you care if it's 256 and not 384? is your project is of classical music symphonic nature?

This topic is about optimising for YouTube, 384 is what they ask for, personally 128 would be fine for most of my stuff.

Sorry Mike but 384 is not what they ask for - it is what they RECOMMEND - by all means get as close as possible but you do seem to be worrying about a recommendation - it is not an order, they will still accept your video with 256.

Hi

Ok here are two uploaded videos for you to look at, after all it is how YouTube treats it that matters.
https://youtu.be/oMtWajU1mWo

MPEG Transport-Stream Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 29.97 fps
Frame-based
(HDMV-NTSC), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 12000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)
2 passes.

This produced a 44.6mb file that was available on YouTube in double quick time.

The second upload

https://youtu.be/8zYLVvhvel4

Was done using my normal output files settings.
MPEG-4 Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 29.97 fps
Frame-based
H.264 High Profile Video: 15000 Kbps
48000 Hz, 16 Bit, Stereo
MPEG AAC Audio: 192 Kbps

Upload was a little slower but so was processing after.

Looking at each file on the screen here direct (not on youtube) we were not able to see much difference between them.
Full media file info is included in the video description boxes.

I'd be most grateful for your observations?

Studied them both in detail on my screen Mike - even had them both playing simultaneously while I switched back and forth between them

both excellent quality and both 100% acceptable - very little difference between them although my impression was that the mp4 was very marginally crisper.

:D Thanks Brian! most helpful, I am left wondering if I used say 9000 as a max bit rate (1k above YouTubes suggested) how that would look?

Instead of wondering here it is

30.5 mb file size, would it be interesting to check 'same as project' and upload best quality?

Well I couldn't find any fault with either of those last two either Mike - I've played them while carefully studying the spokes on the moving wheels and I cannot see any difference.

Hi Brian

Interesting isn't it!

In fact the one conclusion I have come to is YouTube's output is poor compared to the actual files.
Even looking at the 9K file I can read more numbers on the wagons in the background than I can on any of the YouTube videos.
This kind of suggests it's not worth uploading massive high quality files to them, only for them to present video around the 8K mark?

Bit disappointing really.
