Hi
Sorry for any confusion regarding sizing images.
Originally I was thinking the images were large, from a large camera, 18 Mb
They would allow you to crop to 16:9 and retain the high resolution above the video frame size.
Clearly your images are small, the minimum size to retain quality would be about 1000px for standard definition DVD.
When you play the small images on a large tv the quality will be poor.
And that is what you are trying to do when burning the DVD.
Reducing the playback screen would improve on quality so you may wish to consider using 4:3.
Opening the projects made with the trial should be ok with the full version.
But as you only have 40 images then it wont take long to reproduce a new project, if that’s what it takes.
Pan and Zoom
Again with the low image resolution this option will impact on quality.
Do a quick test
Project Properties as Dv-Avi 4:3
Add all imaged to the timeline, no further edits, render to same as project properties
Play the new file on your pc full screen to view the quality

You are better off trying both methods and seeing what works best for you.
My photos look fine when they're enlarged. If they would stay enlarged when I use them in VS 8 I'd be happy!
What do you mean when you say "You are better off trying both methods and seeing what works best for you"?
Is there a video or quick instruction on how to make my photos "16:9 by cropping down" when I save them?
Here's a screenshot of the window that allows different ways to increase the photo size. I've used all methods.
I've gone into the Irfanview and changed the size by increasing the pixel size and by increasing the new size as a % of the original (see above)
The photo does increase in size in the view screen. I then save the photos to my pictures folder. I then import those photos into VS 8. The problem is when I put them in VS 8 the photo reverts to the original small size.
Here's 2 screenshots of the properties of the same photo. One is the properties of the original photo. The other is the properties of the enlarged photo. When uploaded to VS 8 both photos are the same original small size.
This must be something basic I'm doing wrong. This must be a common issue but I can't find the answer.
I hope someone can help.
Thanks. Doug

Sorry to jump in at the middle, and I didn't read closely all replys .
But I looked at your list view and I will do it differently.
On the video track place a background , like a texture image
And all your scanned photos place as overlays on track 2&3
There you will do your edits and transitions, but you shouldn't over zoom as many of your images are too small.

-----------------------------------------------------
Your images being small, below the video frame size will / may show poor quality.
Simply adding pixels to your image will not increase quality.
I asked you to run a quick test to see if the images as is creates a suitable video file.

The quality here is probably the best you are gonna get, at least it gives you an idea as to what can be achieved.
