Screen Capture tool availability

Post by Davidk »

The screen capture tool has proved to be really handy - even the ability to just capture a designated area such as a pre-view screen (similar to You tube) - just to record the tutorials makes it preferrable to all those browser plugins that don't do as much.

But for VS users that haven't updated to X6 or later, that screen capture tool won't be installed on the platform they have. There could be several reasons for that, but the one I have in mind is a student of mine who has parkinsons and uses X3 - video editing is good therapy and he's good at it, but updating to a later version is probably pushing the learning a reach too far. And this tool would be really handy for him.

So, is the video capture tool available separately, and if so would it be compatible with X3?

The VS screen capture tool is not available as a free standing app, however a very good free screen capture utility is CamStudio Free Open Source Streaming Video Software. This is a very easy to use program and all he would need to do is to import the video into X3 after completion

CamStudio is reported to be full of malware according to OpenSource users. Beware! I'd recommend acethinker screen recorder, free and works quite well for me. It is a web-based tool that lets you record your screen right from your browser. It doesn't require you to install any additional plug-ins or add-ons.

Since you answered/brought up this post from over a year ago, I'll add that a very good and while not free, but inexpensive screen capture program is FastStone Capture You get a Lifetime License for a just $19.95 (US).

Ron -- jeffcard brought up this old thread because he is a listed spammer. I have banned him, but since this post by him led on to your suggestion, I have not deleted his post.

I don't use the Corel screen capture, though perhaps should learn to do so. Instead, I use another cheap alternative: Ashampoo Snap, currently version 9.

Lots of suggestions. Thanks to all.

Ken,
The VS tool is the best I've come across - full screen or selectable to a part of it (your choice) - like the small play screen in YouTube, and you can include or exclude mouse clicks, audio etc. Comes with VS but can run in it's own right.
