Where can I store my videos?

Post by rkstudio »

I tried storing my videos that I want to work on..about 20 of them, but I tried storing them on my external hard drive, but when I do, the video is choppy when I play it in VSX6. Is there somewhere online or some other way that I can keep them and download them onto my computer only when I need them? My computer hard drive is getting full and I need to store my videos somewhere else until I need them.

I just found out that I have 115 gb of storage on google photos. Can I store them there for instance then download them to my computer when i have to work on them in VSX6?

I have all my videos - including the latest HD ones stored on external hard drives and have never experienced any playback problems

Are you playing back from the hard drive - maybe the transfer is not fast enough - does it still happen if you transfer the video back to your hard drive and then play them.

is the transfer or hard drive encrypting the files at all - are you using a good reliable hard drive

There are many "clouds" you could store videos on but that may not be any better - the speed of your internet connection would then become a factor.

I thought I read somewhere recently that video quality particularly choppiness, can occur when the video is stored on an external drive. I might have misread it.

I really have no way to tell if the HD I have is good quality or not. I've had it a few years now and it seems ok to me, although I've never had this kind of concern until now.

Yes I am playing back from the HD so maybe the transfer is not fast enough. I don't have the fastest computer in the world...that's for sure.

I wouldn't know if the hard drive is encrypting the files or not. i wouldn't even know how to check.

As far as "clouds" go, I was just going to store them there, then download them to my computer HD when i need to work with them in VS. So i really wouldn't have to worry about the internet connection, at least I don't think I would.

I have a relatively old computer and I can't afford another one right now so I have to make some adjustments with the way i work with VS. My computer HD is getting full so that's why I'm trying to use my external HD or a cloud like google photos.

Thanks!

You can store in the cloud and download back to your pc as you suggest.
You could do the same with the hard drive.
In days gone by, when dv.avi files were most common and usb1 was the normal connection you could run into trouble.
These days, if you are using HD video and still on a usb1 connection (old computer) you could suffer the same.
Also, ext hard drives need to be connected direct to motherboard, so using a back usb port, not connected to the front or to a multi-port external connector.

When using the cloud, did you considered your upload bandwidth?
It takes me ~5 hours to upload youtube a ~1.3GB video.
