VS9 capture problem

Post by Trikie »

I have had VS9 for quite a few years - the handbook is dated 2005. I don't use it very often - last time was in May when it worked fine.

No changes to my computer since but now when trying to capture I get a message "Unable to switch to Capture mode. Check video capture drive working correctly. Failed to build a preview graph."

I also have Serif MoviePlus but find VS9 much easier to use. However MoviePlus does capture so the driver must be working correctly.

Thoughts and suggestions welcomed.

Depends on how much work you want to do to solve the problem.

For me, I'd capture with Serif, edit with VS, problem solved.

If you want to try to solve the problem, we'd need to dig, but I'd first start by saying I've be very surprised if you hadn't made any changes to your pc since May, you must have many updates waiting to be installed!!!

Hi

When you say capture are you using a firewire to capture DV-Avi or are you capturing analogue via a capture card?
How are you connecting the camera to the pc?

It could be the program has a problem, your best option is to do a Clean Install, at least you would start afresh with VS 9

Thanks both.

When I said no changes I was thinking hardware - updates done regularly. I did think of your suggestion to use Serif as a workaround but would like to clear the uLead problem if possible.

Capturing from an old Sony DV camcorder with firewire. Still got the VS9 installation CD so will try that.

Updates can make a big difference to computers.

When you plug in the camcorder, what happens, do you get the new hardware ping?
Then a box saying, what do you want to do?
Do you get an option to capture via VS?
Can you select this?
What happens next?

You are connecting via firewire?

When in VS, you go to the capture module, but get the error message you have already given us?

Ooops, out of date. Tried to update my profile info but can't delete whats already there. How do I do it?

No new hardware ping when plugging in camcorder but my usual routine is to open VS then switch the camcorder on, sometimes before selecting Capture, sometimes after.

Yes, firewire connection and yes get that message.

What are your pc specs, just list them here for the time being.

You may need to set the IEEE1394 (firewire) legacy driver.

Try connecting camcorder with nothing else open, then open VS and try to capture.

Hi

I have not used my Mini DV cam for a while
First I run Video studio selecting the Capture Tab – Video Capture

Now I see a message “No capture device connected”
Then I switch on the camera , windows recognises the camera with a message “new device connected , do you want to use”
Obviously I choose yes.

Connecting the camera also updates the Device Manager and the camera details can be seen, I think in Imaging Devices.
If you don’t see Device manager refresh when connecting the camera then you have a problem with Firewire not VS.

There was problems with firewire updates and reverting the driver to the Legacy driver fixed the problem.

Profile updated.

When opening VS > Capture and then switching on the camcorder the camcorder is identified in the Source box.

If this indicates that the problem is with firewire why does Serif MoviePlus download OK?

There is not a problem with the firewire, as you can capture with another app.
Somewhere there is a breakdown with the capture process.
You say it shows up in the source box?

Have you tried reverting to the legacy driver?

I would suspect an old program like VS9 would work better or exclusively with the 'old' or legacy driver, whereas a possibly more recent version of Serif might work with the updated firewire driver...
