Super Saturated Video Capture Problem

Post by j.razz1 »

I am using the AVerMedia DVD EZMaker Pro PCI card along with DVD MovieFactory 2 and VideoStudio 7. I installed in WinXP SP2 and it worked fine capturing. I did a clean install yesterday and now when it captures it is oversaturating the video. I am using the same capture source and even tried the same tapes that I captured earlier in the week. The capture quality is horrible now. Nothing has changed system wise, capture wise, or setting wise within the software. I need some help here! Thanks!

Update on Saturation Issue- Still a problem...

Post by j.razz1 »

If I change the capture to VCD it looks normal. IF I change it back to DVD, it becomes super saturated. If I change it to MPEG, it goes right back to VCD. I was using MPEG before and never used the other two settings. I want to use MPEG, how do I get it to stay? It will let me select it, but once it realizes that it can't use it, it goes straight to VCD. Why is this? How can I get it it work?
Thanks

is there an option for mpeg-1 vs. mpeg-2? If so, which do you have selected?

What resolution and bitrate do you have set for your captures?

MPEG-2 or VCD are the only options under options, MPEG settings. I am using MPEG-2 at a resolotion of 720x480. Variable Bit Rate with all system settings.

I have an Athlon 64 3200+, 2 gigs of DDR ram, 6 hard drives at 7200rpms, 2 being SATA drives- nVidia GeForce FX 5700

Please elaborate on "all system settings". We need ALL the properties to even begin diagnosing your problem.
John

BTW, don't judge the capture quality with the capture preview screen. See if the problem appears in the Edit mode preview.

When I say "all system settings" I meant- whatever was default under Video Studio 7.

Video Bitrate
Audio encoding
Audio bitrate
aspect ratio
PAL / NTSC
Field Order

Right mouse on one of your capture videos and select "Properties."

Don't ever trust default property settings.

Okay, I can view the file on Windows media player without incident. When I try to view what I captured on Ulead, it shows up overly saturated. I went in and changed the capture plugin from Aver TV Pvr to Ulead DSW Mpeg capture plug-in. Now I can see it the way it should look when I capture it, but whenever I try to play the file back in Video Studio 7, it is overly saturated. What is going on? As for the bitrate it is set at 8,000 with a max of 9,000 (Default for VBR). Audio is Mpeg 2 2400, Aspect I don't know, NTSC. Field order is lower first.

Once I do that, change the driver, I cannot get sound. The captured video looks fine in windows media player 10 but not on Ulead.

Also, The upper field was selected first not the lower, I wrote that wrong. Sorry.

Field Order should be Upper Field First for analog capture, Lower for digital. Looks as if the AVerMedia DVD EZMaker Pro PCI does both - so are you capturing from analog or digital source?

Upper field was first

Your capture properties look fine for an analog source.

I assume you are attaching an S-video cable to your analog camcorder or VCR. Which is it? Have you cleaned the heads?

The AVerMedia DVD EZMaker Pro PCI plugs directly into the PCI bus.

That leaves the driver as a possible cause. Is it the latest and greatest from the website? (but you say you captured OK last week....)

Are the Project Properties set to match the capture properties? These might affect VS7 preview.

I think the problem is with the drivers for your NVIDIA card. Some of the recently released beta ForceWare drivers have a problem with the Digital Vibrance setting and incorrectly apply it to the Overlay as well.

Right-click on your Windows Desktop, select the display managed by the FX 5700 from the context menu, select Color Correction, chose "All" instead of "Desktop", "All Channels", then click on the "Restore Defaults" button, then "OK". Now try playing the video again.

If that fixes the problem, go back to the same spot, and reapply the desired level of Digital Vibrance, making sure that only "Desktop" is selected.

It was the video card settings apparently. Digital Vibrance was off on Desktop and All, but I went to All, moved the slider up and then back to off and hit apply/ok and now the video appears fine. I don't know why it did this or why this made a difference but thanks.
