Slideshow image numbering
I have about 300 jpeg images to go in a slideshow in VSX7.When I have them in the correct sequence, in order for VS to keep them in that order, I intend to use “rename” ( via a right click ).I will name the 1st image 00 so that all clips will be named 00(1) 00(2) 00(3) and so on .(including the brackets)I am wondering if VS will recognise this numbering system so that they are rendered in the correct order.

Re: Slideshow image numbering
VS doesn't care what's the file name (as long as it can find it), VS cares about the order YOU put them in the timeline.

Re: Slideshow image numbering
Why are you putting brackets in there - that's confusing - why not just use 000, 001, 002, 003, etc. that's the usual computer file numbering sequence.
I find the easiest way to sort them is to import all to a library folder - then use the "sort by name" option in the library - and then dragging the whole lot as one down into the timeline.
Incidentally do you know you can rename in bulk in Windows - or get software which will rename all in sequence for you - no need to do each file separately

Re: Slideshow image numbering
Hi Brian
I think Ken is using Windows Explorer to batch rename all images
If you select all files in a folder, right click to rename say as “Image”, all files will rename to show -- image (1) -- image (2)--- image (3) etc.
Windows Explorer automatically inserts the brackets.
Ken you could rename as Slide Show (01) or some other useful name? and yes they will be in order when using in VS
Oh make sure you select the first image when right click -
Yes Brian I agree Batch/Bulk Rename is a great bit of software, unfortunately a bit of a learning curve.

Re: Slideshow image numbering
This is what I have done as a trial on 16 images
1 Make and name a new folder
2 Paste images into folder
3 Select all images via Ctrl+A
4 Right click on 1st image
5 Select rename
6 Rename as image
7 Press enter
8 All images are named but with two (1)s two(2)s then (3)-14 but none are in the original order of copying

Re: Slideshow image numbering
I don;t understand what you are seeing in your #8. Could you post a screenshot of before and after renaming?
From my test, Windows Explorer renames the files in the sequence they are shown in the folder. The renamed list from top to bottom will be xxx(01).jpg, xxx(2).jpg, xxx(3).jpg, etc

Re: Slideshow image numbering
The subject of my project is the record, in jpeg stills, of the progress of a house extension and its internal alterations.
The stills have been taken with a DSLR which records the time and date of when the image was taken, ie 12/07/2015 12.52.
Some of the images have been taken on the same days with only the time altering. I need to have these in order in the Windows folder before I can think about renaming and then importing into VS. One of the problems I am up against is this. For example-I saved 3 images( after using Paint Shop Pro to print the date and other info on the image) from the same date and saved them as in order 16 June 1st, 16th june 2nd and 16 june 3rd.After saving the 1st image then the 2nd then the 3rd –windows put them in reverse order with the 3rd one first and will not let me move them in time order. How do I sort this out.
I am dealing with over 300 images here. Another issue I have is, although I can tell when the image was taken, they are not in date order in the windows folder.I want them in time order before I can go any further What is the best way to deal with this

Re: Slideshow image numbering
Surely your camera will have also given each image a name as well as a date - for instance mine gives each image a sequential name like P1020217.jpg, P1020218.jpg, P1020219.jpg, P1020220.jpg, etc
if you sort by name that should put them in the order taken - then you can use the rename function

Whenever you modify/edit a photo (such as adding the date) and then save it, several of the dates associated with the photo also get changed. Some of the dates changed are date, accessed, date modified, date created etc. There are almost a dozen dates that windows tracks and can be displayed in the listing of photo properties. You can sort on any of those dates.
Why do you want to rename the images?

Ken
To add to canucks comments………….
You can set the folder view to list/sort the files in many different orders.
One is Date Taken and can be useful if you have re-named or changed the date modified, or indeed messed up any order.
How…………
View the folder in Detail, at the top you should see a bar having Name, Date, Tags, Size etc.
Right click the bar, anywhere you should get a window showing the selected columns, ticked……
Click More…. to choose Date Taken from the list
A new column will be created as Date Taken, Click the words to sort the folder in date taken
With the arrow pointing up the list should be in order, oldest first.
Now select all Ctrl+A and rename

Re: Slideshow image numbering
Thanks for all the replies. As you can see, I am new to this aspect of things.I thought I needed to rename ( in fact to give each image a number-some of which were not taken with a DSLR) so that when they were imported into VS they were in the order of being taken.I have imported images before and they have not been in order when rendered. So I thought this would not happen if they were all numbered.Anyway I will look at the advice given and try to sort it(if you see what I mean)

Re: Slideshow image numbering
You didn't mention before that some of the pictures were taken with a different, non-DSLR camera. That of course complicates things when trying to sort by date of picture taken unless the cameras have nearly identical times.
