Tile an image?

Post by TroyTheTech »

Just wondering if I am missing something somwhere... I cannot seem to find how to simply take an image and "tile" it.

For instance, if I take an image of a red circle, I would like to "repeat" that image over and over, making essentially one large image that is composed of many red circles (much like a quilt).
In "The GIMP", for example, I used to go MAP>TILE as a filter, which would generate a huge image made up of "repeating" circles (to use the example above). I would like to use PSP for everything now though, of course  it is much easier to do many things and has more features!

I did a quick Search here for some terms but didn't find anything like this...

Thanks for any ideas

Most ways that I can think of use patterns.

PSP can use any open image as a pattern, and you can set that pattern as a material for use with the fill tool or the paint brush. So the general idea as I see it would be this.

1) Make your image tileable. Seamless edges. You can use the Effects -> Image Effects -> Seamless tile option to create an auto-generated image that is tileable. You can also use offset and cloning to remove any potential seams. Obviously if you're just using a dot then you don't need to do this step as it's already tileable. You want to leave this image open inside PSP.

2) Open the Materials palette by clicking on the foreground color in the materials palette.

3) Select the pattern tab.

4) Select the pattern you want, in this case the image you made. With patterns you can select the size and rotation. Hit OK when it's good.

5) Create a new Image the size you want.

6) Fill with the Fill tool using the pattern you created.

That's it! That is it - thank you :D
I knew PSP must be able to do it, it just wasn't very easy to find... at least, not as easy as something similar like "Export>PictureTube" in the menus.

I also found the Pattern directories in the File Locations interface, so I can save my own where I would like... perhaps that is a Suggestion I may submit, that the process for 'tiling' be a little more obvious (to a novice user) - so many other great features and actions are already easy and intuitive in PSP!

Thanks again for your help with this, LF

Sounds like this method gives you exactly what you want but I'll also mention that you can go to Effects -> Image Effects -> Seamless Tiling.

Kathy, I mentioned using that tool in step one of the process. It only converts the image or selection into a seamlessly tileable image. It still has to be applied using patterns.
