VideoStudio X8 won't update
Hey guys,
I have VideoStudio X8 Ultimate 64bit that I purchased and installed back in August. It comes up as version 18.5.0.23. Everytime I start it up it gives me a box saying I need to update and I click yes. It downloads the 8.5 update, starts it, then closes with a message that it cannot determine what version I have. I've also downloaded and tried running the SP1 update as well with the same result. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Re: VideoStudio X8 won't update
Hi Gnarlo
And welcome to the forums.
The message “cannot determine what version” is usually Corels way to say the patch has been installed.
I don’t know why it should automatically try to install the Service Patch again.
I see 18.5.0.25 as my version with all patches applied, however running 32 bit version, although I suppose the 64 bit version would use the same numbers?
Can you go to Help Check for updates, see what that finds.
There is a final patch a Fix for the previous patch. Go to this web page to download the X8.5 Hotfix
http://www.videostudiopro.com/en/support/updates/
Oh are you using the Ultimate version with ProDad etc. installed, or just the Pro version?
Let us know how you get on

Re: VideoStudio X8 won't update
FWIW, the fully updated 64 bit version number is also 18.5.0.25.

Hi Ken
Out of interest
Did you notice if the last service Patch the Hot Fix actually changed the Version Number?

Re: VideoStudio X8 won't update
Thank you, Trevor and Ken! Hitting about and doing the update gives the same response; it downloads the patch then states that it can't determine the version and closes. I'll download the hotfix when I'm back home and see if it will run. Thanks again!

Re: VideoStudio X8 won't update
Thanks again for the help, folks. Unfortunately, running the hotfix does the exact same thing, "Unable to determine the version" and closes

Re: VideoStudio X8 won't update
If you are seeing that message after trying to install the Hot Fix then I assume the patch has already been installed.lata wrote:Hi Gnarlo

I don’t know why it should automatically try to install the Service Patch again.
Can you confirm that the program is still trying to automatically install the Service Packs when opening or closing the program.

Re: VideoStudio X8 won't update
It does indeed continue to come up with the "Important Updates Are Available" box every time I start up the program. I appreciate everyone's help; the program is by no means unusable and seems to do fine for me other than one or two little niggling problems with pauses in the produced videos. It's just an annoyance having the box always pop up and have to be closed, and in addition it would be nice to know whatever bugs the update and hot fix fixed, were fixed
Thanks,

Re: VideoStudio X8 won't update
Hi Gnarlo
First are you using the Ultimate version of VS or the Pro version,
As far as I know the Hot Fix is to correct some licencing issues for the Ultimate Bonus / ProDad files.
A little annoying when we cannot remove those popups.
You may have to re-install the program to get rid of this problem, however some things to try.
1 / Go to the messages folder and delete it.
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Corel\Messages
The folder is hidden by the operating system, so set “show hidden files and Folders”
Otherwise paste %appdata% to the Start Search box to find the “roaming folder”
2 / Hot Fix File………..
From C:\ProgramData\Corel\Downloads
Remove / delete the hot fix file in one of these folders, sorry but they have strange date names so I don't know which one, do a search for “VSX85_HotFix.exe” and remove the whole folder.
3 / Reset the program to its default state by re-naming the folder “18.0” to “18.0_old”
C:\Users\Trevor\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)\18.0
4 / If I think of anything else to try I will post otherwise Re-install the program

Re: VideoStudio X8 won't update
Hey folks,
Greatly appreciate the help, sorry it took a while to reply; was on a real vacation this last week, away from computers and everything
Tried all the tips in the last post; they have at least gotten rid of the annoying pop-up boxes, thank you! Have not done a re-install yet, but that's next on the agenda after getting some work done. When I click on "Check for updates" in the Help Menu now, it still doesn't install anything and closes with the same error, but at least it's no longer bugging me constantly with the reminder box, so I'll call it a win.
My main issue now is with annoying little pauses in the mp4s it creates, but that's a subject I'll start a new topic on
Thanks again!
