Crop Tool in X8
Does using the crop tool in X8 still cause the image to zoom out, as it does in X7? I am using X7, and I find that "feature" so annoying that I might upgrade just to get rid of it. Also, in what version was that so-called "feature" introduced? If X6 doesn't have it, I might downgrade instead.

Re: Crop Tool in X8
I'm not exactly sure what you mean but I did test crops in PSP8 and X6. In both versions if my image is at 100%, it's still 100% after doing a crop. If I zoom in to 150% and do a crop, the image is still at 150% after the crop in both versions. I don't have any versions later than X6.

Re: Crop Tool in X8
I have never noticed any zooming before when using the Crop tool in any version. I just opened X8 64 bit and inserted a random image. I used the crop tool, and when applied there was no zooming either in or out.
I then opened X7 64 bit and the same image. Again, after applying the Crop tool, there was no zooming in or out on the cropped image... So I can't replicate your problem in either version.

Re: Crop Tool in X8
I can verify the effect that CMurd is trying to explain. It also occurs in X8.
This is the problem:
1. Load a couple of large images at least 2000 pixels .
2. Select the pan tool and then zoom in to 200% (I use mouse wheel for this), drag around to get something central (I used a necklace on a formal photograph)
3. Select the crop tool. Click the top left position of your area to be cropped and drag to the bottom right. Release the mouse button and the image zooms out to fit the whole image on the screen. This does not allow you to position the crop rectangle without having to zoom back in to 200%.
In versions PSP8, X2-X6 the image stays zoomed in to 200% allowing you to nudge the crop rectangle slightly before accepting and applying the crop.
This "feature/bug" only started in X7 and has continued to X8.

Re: Crop Tool in X8
Hartpaul, thank you for knowing what I'm talking about and answering my question.
If in your opinion X6 is a good program that is stable, I think I'm going to buy it. I can get it cheap on eBay. The zooming out in X7 is very annoying.
Does X6 have a 64-bit version, or is it all 32-bit?

Re: Crop Tool in X8
X6 I think was the first with the 32 and 64 bit versions although you will still need to use the 32 bit version if you are using some of the plugins which have not been converted to work with the 64 bit version.
When installing I find it best to accept both the 32 and 64 bit versions (the default).

Thank you so much!
Regarding the zooming out, it's hard for me to believe that Corel thinks it knows so well how its customers work that they would put a feature like that in. At the very least, they should make it something that can be turned off.

Re: Crop Tool in X8
I have X7 and yes, it does zoom out upon activating the crop tool, forcing me to zoom in again.

Re: Crop Tool in X8
I just purchased the X9 ultimate. The same thing is happening. I zoom in, select the crop tool and the image zooms out to 100%. Very annoying.
If I crop the image while at 100%, the cropped image stays small. With the older version I have. After cropping a small selection, it would automatically enlarge the cropped selection. Now I have to zoom into the cropped selection to make the edits I want.

Re: Crop Tool in X8
Just found the answer.
Go to File/preferences/general program preferences/transparency and shading. Then "uncheck" the "Automatically display crop rectangle". This will allow you to crop an image while zoomed in on it.

That box is unchecked for me and always has been, but I'm still having that problem. I have X7, not X8.

Re: Crop Tool in X8
This does appear to be annoying. It would help if there was a way in PSP to pan using temp keyboard shortcut, like in Photoshop, where you could hold the spacebar to pan. Then once you let go, the tool you were using is still selected.

Re: Crop Tool in X8
This is infuriating. The "Automatically display crop rectangle" option has no effect.

Re: Crop Tool in X8
I posted this in another thread here concerning the same problem. I hope it causes no internal problems.
I did some experimenting & have been able to reproduce the zoom out effect by . . . . Selecting the Pan Tool, zoom in with the mouse wheel, Select the Crop tool, then do the crop.
My solution . . . Do not use the Pan tool. Select the Crop tool, zoom in as desired with mouse wheel, do the crop. It holds for me. If re-positioning the image before cropping is necessary, use the sliders. I also uncheck <automatically display crop rectangle> in <Preferences> <Display & Shading>.
