Unable to insert GH4 4K .MOV file in timeline
I have this 259MB 4K video file (4096 x 2160) from my GH4 captured at 24fps which X8 can't handle. I was wondering if anyone could give this a try and verify that this is a problem. The video file plays in VLC player, Windows Media player can't play it in Windows 7, but it plays in Windows 10. Here is the link to the video file:

Hi Al
Sorry I am still having problems with that link.
It may be my end as I am running Windows 7, and indeed having problems.
I'll try the laptop to see if I can download from there.

I too am getting access blocked on my Win 10 machine, though an automatic msg was sent -- presumably to Al -- requesting access.

Re: Unable to insert GH4 4K .MOV file in timeline
It was a slow process to download, but I now have it. I had no trouble inserting it in VS X8.5 on my Win 10 64 bit computer. It played smoothly in Clip mode, though less so in Project mode, but at least it played. I did not try SmartProxy but that could be interesting since my computer is not particularly strong.
Being a .mov clip, I was not surprised when I did *not* receive a message asking if I wanted to match Project Properties to those on the clip. So using Same As Project Properties would not have produced a .mov clip as output. Same As First Clip was greyed out.
So I went to Custom, using .mov as the output format. I set it for 4096 x 2160, 24 fps and Frame Based. I could not match the Big Endian 48,000 kHz audio of the original so just used 8000 kHz stereo instead. Rendering took about 5 minutes for the 24 sec original.
Unfortunately, playback of the new clip was jerky, and rather like the original clip in Project mode. Moreover, at around the 18 second mark, the audio blanked out several times. Not a happy result.
I then tried rendering to Custom > AVCHD 4096 x 2160, 24 fps at 22.165 Mbps and Dolby stereo audio. Rendering was much faster than the first render, taking just over a minute. The new clip played back as smoothly as the original, but when it reached 15 seconds, VS crashed. On reopening VS and inserting the new clip in the timeline, it played back in full and very smoothly. A minute later, though, VS crashed again. It might also be noted that since it was a new project, I would normally have expected that since it was now an .m2t clip, I would get a message asking about matching the Project Properties, but I didn't get any such message.
So the verdict appears to be mixed, at least on my under-powered computer. X8.5 can certainly accept the footage, and you can output similar, though not identical, footage, but I cannot yet explain X8.5's apparent instability apart from attributing it to my computer. However, I have other 4K clips, though using the .mp4 extension, which do not cause VS to crash... So I am wondering -- as I did in the far distant past when AVCHD was just coming onto the scene -- whether the Panasonic tweaking of the 4K format might also be part of the reason...

Re: Unable to insert GH4 4K .MOV file in timeline
Thanks Ken for doing this. You got further than me; VS hangs when I insert the file in the timeline. You got quite far, even to rendering. I do use the 32-bit version, so perhaps that is my problem?
For sure this video file is very new from the latest firmware upgrade to the GH4 that has VLOG-L profile, a profile that produces flat video but capable of increased dynamic range but it needs color grading to get a nice video.

Re: Unable to insert GH4 4K .MOV file in timeline
This clip indeed show how crazy video formats are.
I wasn't able to render a 4K MOV in VS, it just stopped after 9% but did not crashed.
4K WMV stopped with error msg after about rendering 5 frames but not crash.
4k MP4 went OK but not to the full 100MB data rate ( I will try to address it later)

Re: Unable to insert GH4 4K .MOV file in timeline
Hi Guys
Well we do seem to be getting mixed results with this sample.
First I set the project properties to use similar properties as the video.
I have not had a crash so far.
I have to use Smart Proxy to allow smooth playback, buts that’s about normal for my pc.
I have rendered the file to MTS H264 using similar settings, I chose a 24000data rate, no problems
I rendered to MPEG4, modifying the template to use XAVC S MP4 4K (3840 x 2160, 24p, 65Mbps)
Render times were quite slow, I guess if I chose other options I may be able to speed thing up??
So far its working ok using CVSX8 32 bit.
Oh MyDVD has been uninstalled, regarding the Triple Scoop crashes.
Maybe you should uninstall that program?

Re: Unable to insert GH4 4K .MOV file in timeline
Thanks for all your testing. I have now been able to insert the video file in the timeline after setting the Project Properties to be the same as the file's before inserting it. Not sure what the Project Properties were when VS was hanging. Your posts gave me the hint in that VS does not ask to reset Project Properties when video file is .MOV
The net I conclude is that the setting of Project Properties could produce a hang when inserting .MOV video files.

Re: Unable to insert GH4 4K .MOV file in timeline
Well I had thought about resetting the Project Properties to match manually, but found I could not set them to .mov format anywhere. So how did you do that exactly? All I could manage, as I said above, was to use AVCHD settings.
Just in case, I remade an AVCHD file, which again played smoothly. I started a new project but again did not receive a message about matching the Project Properties. And after about a minute, VS crashed again!

Re: Unable to insert GH4 4K .MOV file in timeline
I guess I did not set the Properties precisely identical. I set it to the correct resolution, fps, and chose h264 (.mp4) and not .MOV
In any case, I am now able to insert the video file in the timeline without getting VS to hang. Not sure what to set the Properties in order to recreate the hang, however.

Re: Unable to insert GH4 4K .MOV file in timeline
Hi Ken / Al
I said “First I set the project properties to use similar properties as the video.
I have not had a crash so far.”
That allowed me to set the frame size and more important the frame rate to display all frames on the timelines.
I used AVCHD and Mpeg4 settings for my project properties. That choice depends on what I am intending to make, a disc or PC playback?
I think Mpeg4 would be most suitable as Mov and Mpeg4 are similar.
The audio Big Endian is not supported by VS so no way to copy the properties as Project Properties irrespective of the format.
Canon also use Big E for their audio format.
