[X5] How to brighten up the left half of a video?
Hello
I shot a conference with a wide angle, where the speaker was barely lit up while the screen where he showed slides was often quite bright. As a result, the speaker stands in the dark most of the time.
I was wondering if any of the items in the FX section could help brighten up the left side of the screen where the speaker stood, while keeping the right part as-is.
Here's a 16MB sample of the video I need to doctor:

Thanks for any help.

You need this mask as long as the shot is fixed.
But it's not that the speaker is dark, it's the screen that is too bright.

Thanks much. How do I build a mask around a section of the screen so that part is ignored while I raise the brightness of the rest of the screen?
Incidently, the speaker was also a bit dark because the stage was badly lit, which didn't help.

Hi
First add a FX filter to your video clip, try the Auto Exposure, if that causes the screen to be "burnt out" then try using the image provided by Asik
Place your video on the top track.
Place the image on the overlay track, set to Fit to Screen
Use Chroma Key to remove the black, your video will show through (FX exposure applied)
Render the files to a new video using Same as first Clip.
Using the new video in the overlay track, Chroma to remove the white, the screen shows through.
FX Brightness filter to reduce the brightness of the top video, that will darken the screen.
That’s the idea, you could create your own masks as a transparent PNG, that may work as well.

Hi Asik
Well you got me there, I think you will have to explain how?
Maybe create a Smart Package explaining the process.

Hi
Thanks for the prompt on that mask
Maybe I am a little thick today, how do we darken the white screen to stop it burning out after raising the brightness of the speaker?

Re: [X5] How to brighten up the left half of a video?
Also, which group of effects does that option belong to?
I went through the list ("2D Mapping", "3D Texture Mapping", etc.) but didn't find it.
Thank you.

shoreh,
do a google search on "Mask Frame in VideoStudio" and you will get several hits showing how to use the Mask Frame effect.
Also the VS users manual has a long section on using Mask Frame

Unfortunately that picture is not much help for someone who is not an expert yet

In the Graphic > Frame section, which item did you pick?
---
After clicking on the video in the timeline, and clicking on the Attribute button, no trace of the "Maks & Chroma Key", as refered to in the PDF.

I didn't find overlays that look like the one you posted. Maybe you use a more recent release of VideoStudio.
Re: [X5] How to brighten up the left half of a video?
Thanks, but the video (which is for X2; I have X5) doesn't show how to distort the mask so it fits the screen on the right I want to mask before brightening the rest of that dark video:
For newbies like me, here's how to proceed to get to that point fast:
For newbies like me, here's how to proceed to get to that point fast:
- Click on the Graphic button (one before last: Screen + flower icon)
- Select the white rectangle, and drag and drop it to the timeline onto the layer below the video track; It's now an overlay on top of the video track
- Click on the overlay, click on the Options button somewhere in the middle right
- Click on Attribute
- Select Mask & Chroma Key
- Select a mask that most ressembles the one you need
- Find out how to distort it so it fits what you need.
