Thanks, Trevor. I'm going to try recording at 720p instead of 1080 to see whether my wife's computer can handle that.

Hi Martin
Maybe we missed this info, set your project properties to match the video files properties.

Go to F6 Preferences tick “Show Messages when inserting first video”

Performance tab – make sure Enable Smart proxy is selected + Auto generate
Start a new project

Add your video file to the top timeline, you should receive a message to match the properties.
Unless the properties are already set.

Does that file play smoother? (try Project Playback and Clip Playback)

I have just re-installed Windows 7 after trying Windows 10
downloaded your sample again , works ok for me?

I'll install VS X7 to see if it works on that?

Recording in 720p seems to have done the trick (at least as far as playing clips-- I haven't tried to render yet). Thanks again!
