Choppy Video Clip Playback

Post by MARTINK »

I'm using the trial version of x9 on my wife's new laptop (I have x8 on my other computer.) When I try to play a clip, the audio seems to go ok but the video plays a few frames, then stops, then starts again. There is a lot of jerky motion. It's not in sync with the audio. I'm using mp4 files. Interestingly, when I use Toshiba's media player to watch the video, it works perfectly. I've also enabled the smart proxy manager.

I think all the technical info was input when I registered. I have 4 gb of RAM and the processor is over 2 ghz.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Ummm... there is no version X9! X8 is the latest full version, with a recent service pack 2 which has updated it to X8.5. So I am wondering what exactly you have on your computer.

If it does turn out to be X8/8.5, then could you please right click on the clip in question within the Video Studio library window or in the timeline and copy ALL its properties here or take a screen grab of the properties box and upload it here as an Attachment. Then we might have a better handle on what might be going on.

Are the specs you listed for the wife's laptop? If yes then I don't think that very slow Celeron is capable of doing much video work

Sorry for the mistake. It is x8. I'm at work so I can't right click on the clip in question until this evening.
As to the Celeron being "very slow" (a comment canuck made), it's 2.2 ghz. Is that too slow? I thought it exceeded the minimum requirements.

Thanks again. I'll post the info this evening.

Correction to my last post: I believe the processor's speed is 2.15 ghz, not 2.2. Thanks again.

Hi

When you said you enabled Smart Proxy, did you make sure the proxy files were created.
For existing projects, right click the clip and choose Create Smart Proxy File.

New clips added to the timeline should have their Proxy files created automatically.

I also tried to right click to create a smart proxy file (though I had checked off the preference). It showed me a window with the file name and a box to not convert to a smart proxy file. (Sorry, I don't have the software on my work computer so I don't have the exact wording.) I don't know whether or not it actually converted the file to a smart proxy, though.

I posted the file properties in a separate post.

thanks again.

Hi

Once Smart Proxy files have been creates a small double icon shows on the clips/thumbnails, similar to image below.
Playback in Clip mode may not change, but Project Playback should improve.

Thanks I'll have to see whether the clip converted to a smart proxy file. Was any of the info I provided about the clip I tried to edit helpful in diagnosing the problem?

As it is currently, I don't think I can edit the clip b/c I can't play it to see (a) whether it's worth editing and (b) where I'd trim it, etc. So if I can't solve the problem, I think I won't be able to use the x8 software at all. (I'm in a trial stage.) In other words, if I can't play back in clip mode, I'm not sure how much use project playback would be.

Hi

The video properties look quite standard, nothing unusual there.

Do you have QuickTime installed on the pc, I am not sure if the trial installs QT?

If you are able to upload a sample to maybe Microsoft One Drive, Google Drive etc. then we can try your video on the full X8 version.

Bit of a pain that the trial is limited, although I would have thought it would be ok with MP4.

Hi

Thanks for the sample, can you post that link to this post so others may test. as I say I will be away for the next two days.
I'm sure Ken will give it a run

I did download and run using CVSX8 32 bit version

First impressions........
No problems with Clip playback, but Project Playback needed Smart proxy, but that's probably my older pc capabilities

Panning during recording was far to fast, and maybe zoomed in a little to far, otherwise it looked ok.

Here is the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-iO5S ... sp=sharing. As I mentioned, it plays fine in Google drive and on Toshiba's media player but is unwatchable as a clip for me in x8. I still haven't heard back from Corel.

Thanks, as always.
