PSP X8 RAW issue.

Post by GMack »

I was zoomed in in PSP X8 RAW and saw a lot of red and blue pixelated artifacts that I did not see in Nikon's Capture NX2, nor did they appear in Adobe PS CS6, RawTherapee, or Capture NX-D.

I've attached a crop of the cell tower where it shows up in the uprights. PSP X8 also added a bright red pixel to the blue sky in the lower left the other RAW converters didn't. Utilizing noise and/or sharpening only makes the RAW image worse for the color and pixel errors. This is pretty much straight out of the converters aside from the tight crop.

Camera was Nikon D800E, fwiw, and the tower is about 300' away with a 35mm lens.

Ideas as to why the bad RAW conversion?

Thanks.

I don't use PSP for RAW much, but your image seems to contain a lot of chromatic aberration (a lens limitation) appearing as the red and blue pixelated areas. The other software used must correct some for this. And sharpening can add to the pixelation. However, my opinion is that PSP's Raw codec for your camera is incorrect and not compiled properly. You use to be able to contact Corel and submit a sample and they would try to fix their codec, but now with their paid support and 30 day warranty I'd hurry to submit the issue to them. I assume your camera is listed as supported.

Look at the image in this link and see if it resembles what you have problems with (also brief explanation).--

I agree with rondo, that's Chromatic Aberration. PSP's handling of RAW files isn't as good as most other programs I've found. Best to convert to an intermediate file somewhere else then do the touchups with PSP.

Thanks, does seem to be some bad aberration thing going on with PSP X8 RAW engine. Bad part is in their "recognized camera" list the Nikon D800E isn't in it, just the D800 so maybe the anti-aliasing filter between those two bodies. I would have guessed the D800 would be the same as the D800E but maybe not. Too bad as it appears the PSP X8 is the worst for RAW images made off that camera out of the several of RAW converter's I've tried.

Their support seems to steer clear of anything but installation and activation issues in the first 30 days. Looks like some $29.95 paid deal for any support now, but might be a wash of $29.95 too if they do not support the D800E anyway. Time will tell if they get their RAW engine fixed, and support that model.
