On VS Pro 8, where is my project saved to on my computer??

Post by Mike Warren »

On VS Pro 8, when I save my video project after working on it, where exactly is it saved to... so I can be sure it is backed up on my external back up drive. Regards, Mike

Hi Mike

When you first save the project you are shown a "Save As" window, this allows you to choose a Save In location, a file location.

By default the My Projects folder is used to save project files. C:\Users\User Name\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\My Projects

Saving a project as far as I know will use the last saved location, (that's the way windows works) but again allowing you to choose another folder if you wished.

I normally allocate a Working Folder for each of my projects, so all my video clips / image clips used on a project are in one folder, I also save my VSP project files to the same folder.

If you have not changed the save location then I guess your files will be in the My Projects folder.

Just be aware as well that saving the Project file to an external hard drive by itself will not necessarily back up a project. The project file (*.vsp) is merely a small text file telling the program what is in the project, where the clips are located, and what editing has been done to it. It does not actually contain those clips, voiceovers, titles, transition and background music. Those will remain wherever they were originally on your computer. So if, for example, you have a catastrophic failure of your computer hard drive and all the clips etc were originally on it, then having the vsp file on an external drive will not achieve anything as it can no longer link to the original clips etc.

You can, of course, use SmartPackage within VS to package up all the relevant files plus the project file and store it on an external hard drive. That will protect everything.

Personally, like Trevor, I establish separate working folders for each project, and I usually do this on an external hard drive just to add this extra degree of security (and not to clutter up my main hard drive too much!) Although of course that is trusting that the external hard drive itself will not fail! Touch wood, though, that has never yet happened....

Gentlemen, so sorry for delay in responding to your answers. Had to spend time with my mother in hospital. In any case, I found your answers enlightening and very helpful. So a big thank you to both of you. It's good to know you're there. Sincere regards, Mike
