How to split an embedded UTF track from video track?

Post by Jim C »

Hi, can anyone tell me how I can split an embedded subtitle (UTF-8) file from an MKV file? When the video clip containing the UTF stream is inserted into VSX8's timeline the subtitle does not appear during playback or after conversion. I don't know if it can even be detected within the VSX8 platform, as it does not show up under properties like an audio file (by right clicking on video file). The subtitles appear in Windows Media Player during playback, but not after being converted or modified by VSX8. I can also see the text stream when examined on MediaInfo (see attachment)
mediaInfo Text stream.pdf
Text stream viewed in MediaInfo
(69.78 KiB) Downloaded 119 times
. I am looking to split the UTF-8, and then be able to add it back in to the text timeline in order for it to function under my selected output (DVD). Having the option of to toggle it on and off during playback would be nice as well. I tried a Hail Mary by converting the MKV to an MPEG-4 file in Format Factory thinking it may make the stream viewable like it does on some audio streams, to no avail. Also after examining the VSX8 saved clip or the Format Factory converted MPEG-4 clip under MediaInfo the text streams are missing (I assume lost in conversion). Interestingly the subtitle stream is not visible in Windows live Movie Maker.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

TIA, Jim

Hi Jim

And welcome to the forums.

I do not think that CVSX8 can extract the subtitles from any video file.

Your best option is to google for a program to do that “Extract MKV Subtitles to SRT”
I found this whilst googling
http://mytechieself.blogspot.co.uk/2011 ... m-mkv.html
Take care when downloading software, I have not tried this site so cannot really recommend

Once you have the SRT you can import the titles to VS timeline to edit along with the video.

Wow, thank you for the fast response and on point Rec. I wasn't having luck with my search parameters, and will take a closer look at this before jumping in with both feet. Norton does not like Format Factory and it requires me to rescue it from quarantine when I use it, otherwise I leave it off my machine. I try to be careful as I like my platform to be as stable as possible, but sometimes the need can somewhat outweigh the risk. I should probably have a segregated machine for such purposes to help offset some of the risk.

There should not be any problem with format factory itself.
The problem occurs with, as it is with many free products, you are enticed to install a variety of other products who pay FF to send them out to you. Just say no to each one as it asks you.

I've had no problems with Format Factory itself, and I uncheck all the extra baggage during installs. It has performed well for me without any instability. However, Norton Security Suite views it as a moderate risk, and I think that is because of the very nature of the software. Norton statistically didn't seem to have a lot of background and no actual red flags surrounding it. In my case it did required me to rescue it from quarantine and reinstall. It could be just a matter of FF getting whitelisted by Symantec.
