Working with animated GIFs

Post by gluepack »

I recently had occasion to work with an animated GIF of 100+ frames where I needed to increase the canvas size.
I didn't seem to be able to use any of PaintShop Pro X8, CorelDraw H&S suite X7 (nor Animation Shop) to do what I would have thought was a simple function. Well, not without a considerable amount of effort.
I "want it now," so I Googled and ended up downloading a try-before-you-buy copy of Adobe FireWorks which did it simply and immediately.
I then used PaintShop Pro to create my overlays and copy/pasted them into FireWorks. I just needed a few to cover all of the hundred or so frames and that went smoothly too.
This is not an advertisement for FireWorks, which costs the earth and has been discontinued anyway (like Animation Shop).
However, am I missing something? Could I have done it simply and immediately with my expensive Corel products (if not, why not)? And, as Fireworks is on a 30 day trial, what alternative do I have, if I want to do the same thing in 30 days time?

You could open your image in Animation Shop, Ctrl+A (select all); Ctrl+C (copy) and open PSP and Ctrl+V (paste). Next click on the first frame in the layers palette while holding down the shift key and then click on the last frame to select all. Go to Image -> Canvas Size to make your adjustments and then save as .psp file type so you can open in Animation Shop and proceed with your animation.

If there is a simpler way I'm unaware of it. You can resize in Animation Shop but I don't know of a way to alter the canvas size.

Thanks for that.

At least it is cheaper than buying FireWorks. However, as Animation Shop is no longer supported, it is a bit disappointing that there is effectively no way of doing this directly in PaintShop Pro.

Thanks again.

You're welcome. It's not the most elegant method but at least it will get the job done and save some cash. :)

Thanks, I'll try it.

Not sure about their payment process by SMS as their BGN conversion to Euros is way out ;) but, I'll try it for free and see how well it performs.

There are more tools for GIF images ...like EximiousSoft GIF Creator - http://www.eximioussoft.com/gifcreator.htm, that support resize canvas too.
