Problem with Smudging in X7 and continued in X8

Post by jojomart »

Hey everyone,

Some of you know that I write scripts for digital scrapbooking designers. Last September, I noticed a problem with smudging in X7. I was in contact with Paul at Corel Support Services - this is his email to me about the issue:

Hello Joanne,

Thank you for contacting Corel Customer Support.

Sorry for the long wait. It certainly is an issue with the Smudge brush as I am able to duplicate it in a different image, and using a different brush. It seems to leave a dark edging around the area that is being smudged which seems to have produced the same thing that you are looking at in your script. I have reported it to our engineering team so that hopefully it will be explained. And if not, corrected.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any further questions.

Regards,
Paul

Unfortunately, this was the last email I received from support. Now, the same thing is happening with X8, so it obviously hasn't been fixed yet. Is anything ever going to be done to correct this? It's really hard for me to make my scripts available to customers who are using X7 or X8, if they turn out looking different than they should. This really needs to be looked after. It seems like each new version messes something up that worked perfectly in previous versions - that's NOT a good thing for people like me.

This is the way the tail should look:

And this is what it turns out like in X7 and X8 both:

And it does the same type of thing to the horse's mane as well :(

It's just really frustrating.

Thanks,
Joanne

It seems to me that there are a number of tools in PSP that have the feathering (hardness) backward - when hardness is set very low one expects the edge to fade out but in some tools the edge becomes darker. This is very noticeable in the burn brush and paintbrush with wet look paint. I've been asking for years to have this fixed.

The smudge brush appears to be suffering from the same problem. Don't hold your breath as to when it will be fixed.
