PSP 8 was ten years ago! I don't remember the exact command.
Was it possible to click inside the main image (must find the tool), and this click activates the layer where the image is clicked?
If yes, it could perhaps permit to activate the desired layers?

turn visibility of 3 layers off.

Delete merged layer
Turn visibility of remaining three layers back on.
Very clever !

The Move tool did this. Still does this. However, in PSP 8 you could only mutli-select vector objects. Not layers. If you wanted to move multiple layers you had to group them or link them then use the move tool.

The Move tool would only select one layer at a time. And if you held "SHIFT" it would ensure that you only moved the currently active layer. It still acts like this.

The Deform tool did all of the skewing, dragging, resizing, etc that the pick tool does now. But it only worked on the currently selected layer. You couldn't select new layers with it, you had to use the layers palette.

So the pick tool improved moving and deforming. But multiple layer selection did not occur until X4 of PSP. The only things we were able to select multiples of were vector objects.
