Trial version worked far better than the paid version

Post by daviator »

About a week ago I downloaded the trial version of VideoStudio 8.5 and imported some converted (via GoPro Studio) GoPro videos from my Hero 3+. The clips played fine and I was able to edit them and get the general feel of the program.

This week I purchased the full version. I removed the trial version first (learning my lesson from trying to activate a trial version of Corel Draw, what a nightmare) and downloaded and installed the paid version.

Now in the paid version my same clips are choppy and stutter and 'editing" them is a nightmare.

What a scam. we'll see if their honor their 30 day guarantee.

PC is is a Dell 620s with an I5 processor
Video card: MSI AMD Radeon R6570-MD1G/LP
8gb of RAM
Hard drive is a brand new 240GB SSD with a fresh install (not upgrade) of Windows 10.

Hi daviator
Welcome to the forums.
I assume your project properties are incorrect, probably using SD instead of your GoPro HD settings.

Go to F6 Preferences and set Show Messages When Inserting First Video…..
Start a new project and add one of you original Go Pro video to the timeline.
You should receive a message asking to match the project properties. Does that happen?
Choose the details button to view the video properties, (right hand panel) copy and paste the text to your post.

You mentioned Converting the GoPro video files, why would you want to do that?
Ken Berry also uses GoPro with no problems, as far as I know, I am sure he will comment when he returns from slumber land.
This is my second attempt at posting, Windows 10 is freezing on a regular basis, what a pain….

Hi Trevor, thanks so much for the quick replay. I'll post the video properties as soon as I'm able.

I convert the videos via GroPro's software as other video editing tools I have tried had issues with opening unconverted files. It would be a great time saver if I don't have to do that. What troubles me is that my video clips played fine in the trial version but not so in the paid version when I really didn't change anything when using either version.

I also saw a video about using using Smart Proxy to "speed things up". I did that and it helped but it was really slow to create the proxy files so in the long run I don't feel I saved much time.

As for Windows 10, I too experiences freezing on both of my machines after upgrading to 10. However I have noticed a gradual decrease in the number of freeze ups and if you let it sit, it will almost always come back (unfreeze).

I have 30 years of experience as a still photographer which includes 20+ years of editing photos digitally and 20+ years of illustration experience with Corel Draw but video editing is a whole new animal. My hat is off to video/film editors who make it look easy.

Thanks again!
David

FWIW, as Trevor has already said, I very regularly make videos with exactly the same HD properties as the original mp4 footage from my Hero 3. No conversion necessary. Moreover, I have no trouble at all doing so with X8/8.5 on my Windows 10 machine; nor did I have problems with X6 or X7 on Win 7 and Win 8.1 machines. Using the workflow Trevor has outlined, I start a new project and insert the first of my Hero clips. I get a message asking if I want the Project Properties to match those of the clip. I say OK, then do my editing. When that is done I go to Share and select 'Same As Project Properties'. The resulting new clip has exactly the same properties as the original clips, and quality is excellent. In fact, coincidentally just last night I played back my latest effort for visiting friends on my 46" HDTV and I was more than happy with the result (as usual! )

Found the problem.
Tonight I imported the videos straight from the camera card. They played fine in the preview. However, since the camera was mounted upside under an aircraft I needed to rotate the videos 180 degrees. Once I did that, the videos jerked and stuttered like I was running on a 486.

I guess I could stand on my head and edit them but that's not very practical. So I guess I have two choices convert the videos first in GoPro Studio which has a flip option but adds even more time to the edit process or move on an try another product.

Solved the problem! Uninstalled VideoStudio and got refund. Bought PowerDirector 13. Added same video clip, rotated 180 degrees, plays smooth as glass.

Good for you, I hope the PD13 forum will get you thru its problems.

Too many people go for blaming the program when, often, it is the PC configuration that they have (and has nothing to do with the program itself) I have had problems with choppy video on Preview due to overloading my PC BUT the rendered video is as smooth as silk. So it is not a serious problem and, when it happens, I just live with it!! It often depends on what the PC is running along with VS at the time.
I also have PowerDirector 13 but am finding it difficult to use compared with VS.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

If "too many people are blaming the app" then maybe the software developer needs to do a better job of either explaining the "proper" configuration or list more realistic specs for their applications.

In this case it was the program. Rotating the video 180 degrees should have no affect on how it plays. So far so good with PD 13. I have no need to wait for a smart proxy file to render or flip and convert my GoPro videos first.

The required computer specification is clearly stated in the VideoStudio page on the Corel web site. I gave a copy of the spec to my Dealer when I bought a new PC to run VS.
