VideoStudio X8 Can't Create DVD from GoPro AVI

Post by Pdw911 »

With VideoStudio X8 it seems like the DVD creation hangs up at 3% and then goes no where. I have set up project definition to match DVD 16:9 coding and have added a 8Kb avi file that was originally created by VideoStudio, but saved as an HD AVI used Xvid codec 1920 x 1080 at 50 FPS...the DVD settings are scaling it down obviously but I'm trying to maintain the 16:9 attribute

The Corel Video Studio MYDvD seems to convert this file quickly, but obviously there is no 16:9 setting

Any help or advice greatly appreciated

What has GoPro got to do with this? I have a Hero 3 and AFAIK the camera cannot be set to record video in anything but AVCHD .mp4 format (and usually at 16:9 though slightly stranger formats are also possible e.g. 1920 x 1440).

Do you still have the original of that clip before it was converted to XVid AVI? What are its Properties? Did it come from a GoPro? And why did you convert it to AVI in the first place?

GoPro has nothing to do with it but I was being clear about the media that was converted because sometimes people ask..the GoPro Codec is different (proprietary) so I wasn't sure if it made a difference

Probably due to ignorance I convert all my videos to AVI...I used multiple GoPro clips and merged them into a single project, multi-clipped all of them, muted them, stabilized them and added music as a project and then created the AVI using VideoStudio X8...the XVid settings used for the AVI 1920 x 1080...50 FPS (to match the GoPro native files setting) 24 bit RGB single pass encoding with a target bit rate 20407...I know this produces a large file, but once again, using another video manipulation software I got better video at a higher bit rate...the AVI plays and displays fine on a PC and looks very good on a large screen HD monitor

I tried reloading this AVI as a new project (projects settings were the HD settings above) and "share" as a DVD at the default settings except 16:9..this just seem to hang up and nothing for an hour showing 3% progress and nothing converted

I set up a new project at the default dv 16:9 setting that you find in the pull down screen, re-imported the AVI and tried to "share" with the previous DVD settings...once again churned for an hour and this time I saw 4% progress but at this rate it would take over 24 hours to create a DVD

I'm sure I have some settings incorrect and maybe the program is trying to convert...but as I said most of my video conversion has been done with another package that produced reasonably good video but less than stellar DVD quality (much like you get with MyDVD) (not GoPro studio as I wasn't happy with the programs features) but I liked what I saw with the Corel package so I bought it

I have all of the original files on my GoPro 4 silver

Well in fact GoPro seems to me to have everything to do with it. Moreover, I just don't understand why you are converting your projects to XVid AVI. As I said above, I have the Hero 3, but it produces video in the same format as the Hero 4. And I am also not sure where you got the notion that the 'GoPro Codec is different'. You don't get a CD or DVD with the camera to install on your computer. It uses codecs which are already there, and Video Studio can certainly handle GoPro native footage (.mp4 using the AVCHD H.264 codec which comes with VS).

I do a lot of videos with my GoPro footage, and here is what I do with VS X8/X8.5... First off, I make sure that in the VS Preferences > General, the box beside 'Show message when inserting first video clip' is ticked. Then when I start a new Project and insert my first GoPro clip, I get a message asking if I want the Project Properties to match those of the clip. I OK that, then do my editing. At the end of it, I simply go to Share and select 'Same As Project Properties' (or Same As First Clip) and this produces a new mp4 with exactly the same properties as the original. And it plays just fine as is when I transfer it to a USB stick drive or external hard drive and plug that into my Blu-Ray player for playback on my HDTV. And of course it also plays back just fine on the computer.

Now if you are making a DVD (why?), then you need to have DVD-compliant mpeg-2. So again there is absolutely no point in converting your GoPro footage to AVI. So you just start a new project and insert your new, finished mp4 and go to Share > MPEG-2 and select one of the presets for DVD or if you want to specify your own properties, Custom and set them there. Or use a third party video converter to convert the mp4 to mpeg-2. Then use that mpeg-2 to burn your DVD.

I am a total noob but I too convert my GoPro videos as I was unable to play any of them on any of my PCs (Windows 7, 8 or 10) unless I converted them via the GoPro software (this is prior to owning any video editing software other than MS Movie Maker). I assumed that it was because GoPro used a propriety codec.

However, I have read just today elsewhere on this forum that conversion might not be needed when using VideoStudio. I'll try it tonight and see if it's true. That is assuming I can get my performance issues with the paid version of VS solved.
