Problems with dialog boxes and palettes (4k, 200% scaling)

Post by mounsey »

Hi there everyone.

Firstly, I have checked the previous posts - but couldn't find anyone else who seems to have posted about the issues I have. First of all here's my setup:

O/S : Windows 10 Professional
Windows Font Sizes : 200% Scaling (Across the board / O/S)
Screen : DELL 4k Monitor (24") - this explains why I have Windows scaled to 200% zoom.

I've been with PaintShop Pro since the JASC days - *very* happy customer.

However... I'm having serious usability issues since a) Moving to Windows 10 - and b) Having Font Scaling / Zoom on Windows at 200% (essential for a 4k screen, believe me!).

The main issue (and I'll provide some screen grabs soon) is that many dialog boxes are no longer usable (e.g. Brightness and Contrast - a key example). The components of the box (sliders, etc.) have not scaled properly - so overlap and you can't see many / any of them.. = nightmare and PSP broken / unusable :(

Is anyone else on here experiencing similar issues? I've tried Windows 10 compatibility settings (e.g. run in Windows 8 mode) - but no joy. I'm sure that the 200% scaling of Windows is the issue combined with my 4k screen?

PS. *if* this is no longer an issue with X8, I'm happy to upgrade immediately - as I was planning on doing so anyway.

I see a block here re: 4k support which *seems* promising?

John, unless I've missed it, I don't see a mention of which version of PSP you are using. Yes, the screen shots would help.

I am using Win 7 so I can't comment on the experience with Win 10. I have my display set at 125% (medium) and have not worked with greater magnification. In previous versions of PSP various adjustment dialog box displays were corrupted and as Corel modified them in different versions more and more did not display correctly. For PSP X8 this problem has been largely fixed. I don't know what will happen at greater magnification but at 125% (and likely 150%) the dialog boxes are fine. Again, I don't know how they work with Win 10.

And I would suggest that you try the Trial version of X8 first and see if it fixes your problem before purchasing.

There are indeed issues with PSP X8 on Hi DPI displays, despite it being billed as "an enhanced interface compatible with Ultra High DPI displays (up to 250% zoom with 4K resolution)."

I'm running on the latest Dell XPS 15 (3840 x 2160 - 4K @ 250%)

Tiny icons on open/save dialogs:
Image

Overlapping text on Recover Images dialog:
Image

Near impossible to grab the 1px wide borders to drag & resize dialogs
Image

Near impossible to click arrows to expand layers (you can't click them centrally, you have to click towards the bottom-left corner of the icon)
Image

Tiny radio buttons on Auto-Action Preferences screen
Image

I had high hopes when I read X8 had support for 4K screens... and whilst it's certainly better than previous versions, 4K support with DPI scaling isn't fully there yet! :(

Try this post and see if it's the issue. http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=57945
Because the only change was Win 10 and not PSP I would think the issue is a Win 10 problem.
Maybe!!!

Yes, I'm aware it's an issue with desktop scaling, however, the blurb for PSP X8 states it has "an enhanced interface compatible with Ultra High DPI displays (up to 250% zoom with 4K resolution)"

PSP X8 isn't fully compatible with desktop scaling i.e. if Windows scaling is set to 250% in Windows 10, then as per my screenshots a number of issues exist

OK. I really don't understand the issue. I don't run Win 10. Just Win 8.1. All I know is that on my hi res screen all my programs, PSPx7, Photomatix etc, had the same issue until I addressed the settings in Win.
I guess you have to ask Corel to clarify their definitions.

Good luck.

I purchased AOC 4K U2879G6 Monitor running 3840x2160@60Hz. And found with my 150% DPI Scaling on Windows 10 Pro x64. That PSPX8, Paint Shop Pro X8, was totally screwed up. Here's the pictures.

But with a bit of help of Vianca of the Corel Support team I managed to fix it.

Follow these instructions to resolve the problem:
  • Right click your launch Icon and select Properties (You might have to do this for each one you use)
  • Choose the Compatibility tab, and Tick the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" as below.
This does not make the app go blurry. It actually fixes the problem if you continue on with the next bit.
    Snapshot_5.png
  • Start the app from the same shortcut icon you just modified and go to File > Preferences > Reset Preferences.
    Snapshot_6.png
  • Now check the 'Reset Workspace to defaulty configuration', 'Reset dialog positions and last used settings', 'Delete all cache files'
    Snapshot_7.png
  • Press OK and the PSP will restart and do some magic.
Your workspace will be reset so you might have to organise the panels how you like again. But now the popup windows are all fixed.

Hope that helps others, reply if it did, and especially if your running a different version.
I am running PSPX8 v18.2.0.61 x64. You can get your version from the Help > About menu.

Hi Simon: That's a neat trick, thank you for sharing. I recently upgraded to a 4k monitor and had issues with some, but not all, dialog boxes. I reloaded X8 and the two service packs and all of the dialog boxes work fine now. That was before I saw your post.

What I can't find a way to scale properly are the plug-ins such as Athentech Perfectly Clear, Nik Collection by Google, and the Topaz collection. Plus, they don't scale properly when I slide them over to my old 2k monitor, where they used to read just fine when it was my only monitor. If you have any tricks for plug-ins on a 4k monitor I would be very grateful to learn them. Otherwise I think I'll start a new post for that issue.

Hi, folks.

I've been getting the exact same problem - PSP 2019 and PSP 2020.

Unfortunately, none of the solutions above worked for me.

What is interesting is that PaintShop Pro store edition shows the same issue.

Very odd!

I'm still waiting for a workaround; maybe in the next version?

Thanks for this tip - it has solved my problem of being able to use PSP and be able to read text on other applications.
