X8 - whites rendered yellow

Post by edwinn »

Installed X8 Trial this morning, and right away there is a serious rendering issue in MANAGE Preview and EDIT workspace modes.
Pure whites show up as yellowed, or in sepia tones.

Here are two quick screen clips.. sorry if they're lame.

First you see a photo of Marylin Monroe and Dorothy Kilgallen, and then a map of Napoleonic Europe, with their thumbnails as reference.

Is there a setting or adjustment for this?

Hope it's not show-stopper, and there wasn't time in the TOPAZ trial period to figure out why it was happening with their filters in X7.

I have no idea why there is a difference between the thumbs and the Edit preview - different rendering engine? I have been scanning negatives from many years ago and the the scanner does not render the colours correctly. I've found that I can achieve satisfactory results using white balance or smart photo fix.

Not sure what the significance of Topaz is in this instance. Also, if you have other versions of PSP, try these images in one of those. I would not be surprised that if it is a PSP "problem" it exists in earlier version. I doubt if the rendering has been changed from earlier versions.

After purchasing X7U, I was ready to get into TOPAZ filters, however they (the images) were rendered with a yellow hue in Topaz.

Today after installing X8 Trial, I see everything in the Manage Preview and Edit workspace are yellow.

Back to trusty ol' X4.

Here are images from the same folder rendered in X4.

Since it's not a common problem, will have to assume there's some problem with the small form factor XE computer and its integrated mainboard video processor.

Another thing.. I've had Windows Photo Viewer install for a long time as a `quick look´ draw for images, and that has ALWAYS rendered with a slight yellowish hue but not X4. That means it must be the PC video hardware and/or divers?

Do the images have an embedded ICC Profile? I'm not sure how to check that actually other than changing the workspace color profile and seeing if it gives a warning when you open the image. Essentially I'd expect this kind of thing from images without an embedded profile because the system has nothing to go on for determining how the colors should look and just uses the current workspace to make the interpretation.

Sorry I can't help in this as I'm so new to PSP. I have X7 and exactly the same thing happened to me. I yellowish cast on all photos, even in the organizer. Don't know what I did since but it's gone now but was a bummer. Played with white balance but nothing.

I'm not seeing that issue with X8. I took your example image and opened it in X8's Edit workspace. The top "yellow" images of course stayed yellow and the bottom white images still look white; they did not turn yellow.

FWIW, I got exactly the same as Kathy with that image. But also FWIW the yellow cast was pretty easily fixed by adjusting the White Balance. Best results came after turning Smart White Balance off...

I am having the same issue with Paintshop X8 - cannot find any adjustment to resolve... white balance makes no difference.

PS8 renders correctly when I save and upload the images - just tough to work with...

The above image shows Paintshop 8 alongside Paintshop 6

Please see attached image

Any suggestions?

Best I can tell (though there's no proof) is the graphics subsystem isn't up to par. Possibly because video chip is integrated? and/or low RAM?

Well, contacted Corel about issue and got a nonsensical reply. It said something like 'glad you got it working' but X8 was uninstalled. This happened in PSPX7U when trying to use Topaz filters. X7 rendered ok, but loading image into Topaz workspace showed a yellow discolored image. One cannot make adjustments too well when image is discolored from the git-go.

I'm happy using X4 right now with custom tool bars and workspace etc, and still honing/learning new tricks. Been a PSP user since Jasc v5 (limited/trial use of v3 before that) and very serious user of v9.

I had the same problem in a earlier thread. Here's the text:
"Fixed! (at least for now) For those with this problem, here's what I did. > File > Color Management > Monitor profile > my monitor was listed. > changed to: sRGB color space profile.icm

Seems unchecking "color management" also works."

Hope that may help.

Thanks for that. I turned off color management and it is much better.

FYI: Graphics Card AMD Radeon HD 7700 series, so a little better than integrated hardware.

Unchecking the box just solved the problem for me. Thank you! 8)

There is a very long discussion about colour management here - http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php?f=56&t=58629. Turning off colour management is one option but not the only one.

I suspect there is something wrong in PSP X8 where if one has a calibrated screen made with some external hardware, e.g. Spyder or x-rite, which writes a default profile that starts when the computer does, PSP X8 then starts its own color management settings once opened and sticks them there until the computer is rebooted.

I just launched PSP X8 and it went bluer this time. Sometimes it goes yellow depending on the D50 or D65 last used in calibration (or set in Windows Color Management). Too bad it won't leave the start-up profile alone rather than superseding it, and sometimes even random changes in its own Color Management settings too that it seems to alter by itself for whatever reason (Reading prior default start-up info maybe?).

Maddening bug, and why I don't use X8 that much over PS CS6 that leaves the color management settings alone and doesn't require a re-start to get me back to the default hardware calibrated settings like X8 does. Least the Eizo external monitor running Color Navigator 6 pops up a warning that "PSP X8 has changed settings and gamma." I can change it back to default on that monitor without a reboot since it has its own internal graphics card and tables.

Have to wait and see if Corel fixes the CM matter, as well as the lack of a good black against CS6 per the above link too.
