Problems updating Aftershot (Ubuntu)

Post by rachelk »

When I first installed Aftershot it was version 2.1.2.10. When I tried to update some time later it stopped working. I opened a help ticket at Corel but in return they sent me a link which related to windows, not linux. I pointed this out but they were unable to help further so I reverted to my previous version but pretty much stopped using it.

Now I need to update to a newer version becaue I am using a different camera and the file formats aren't supported by previous versions.

I've run up against the same problem. When I try to open the program, I get the message about the default directory then nothing. Once (but only once) I got the 'Aftershot has closed unexpectedly' message but usually it's a case of just nothing happens.

Has anyone else had this problem and managed to solve it? Any help gratefully received. I have asked Corel for help but given the response last time I'm not optiistic.

And incidentally, has anyone noticed that if you submit a help ticket via the official Corel site you have to select an OS and there is no option for Linux? Just long list of Windows and Mac versions.

Hello RachelK.

Probably teaching you to suck eggs here.. But have you tried the following?

1\ run it from a shell rather than clicking on the icon? You might get something useful logged to the shell that youd miss otherwise..

2\ spin up another user account on the box and run it as that.. That will rule out broken user specific setting. I've had to splat my asp settings a couple of times when I've had similar probs.

Cheers

Fantastic!

Ok, the shell option didn't work but the program DOES open under the guest user account. (It doesn't. after all appear to recognise the file format that Corel claimed it would, but that's another issue).

So, now to an Ubuntu forum to find out how to clean up my user settings.....

Thanks for the suggestion. I had something similar before with network settings working as guest but not as main user, but it never occurred to me that it might be something similar here.

First, the prog is, of course, AfterShot and not aftershop as in the thread heading. I will try to edit it.

Second, I've got the prog working!!! Instead of allowing the first run (for each 'first run' I have to uninstall and reinstall the prog) to choose a detault folder which already existed from a previous version, I created a new folder for it and Bingo! it works.

Sadly, it doesn't, after all, support my camera RAW file format.

I have the Finepix HS55 which is basically the same as the HS50 (which Corel say is supported) but with a different name in different markets. The specs are the same. So I guess Aftershot must decide it doesn't like the name of my camera before it even looks at my file.

If you are correct in your assumption that your camera is "basically the same as the HS50", then you should be able to overcome the incompatibility by changing the camera details in the RAW file before Aftershot gets near it. You will find many threads on this in this forum. Worth a try, I would think, provided you work on a copy so that any damage is non-fatal. Do you know about the strings command? PM me if not.
