I started having the dreaded 'file format mismatch' again and tried to uninstall/reinstall VS8.5 in order to resolve the problem. I deleted all related files, folders, keys via iobit uninstaller as well as QuickTime before re-installation. I then installed VS8, bonus material, contents, and newblue paint effects for the ultimate version. Upon opening VS for the first time a window that seems to be loading VFX files started (very slowly) which caused VS to crash before it completed. Maybe the problem lies herein?? When I try opening VS again I am prompted to update VS with the hotfix making it version 18.5.0.25. My vsp projects seem to import showing the assets (sometimes) but the program stops responding for no apparent reason as before and I have to close it out via task manager. Renaming the 18.0 folder doesn't help either.
Any help would be much appreciated.
**EDIT**
I did another uninstall/reinstall but this time I opened VS before proceeding to install the next asset to see if I could narrow it down. I did not have any problems opening VS after each installation- I did not see the VFX file window loading nor did VS crash. I wasn't prompted to install the hotfix so I went to 'check for updates' and manually updated to version 18.5.0.25. I can now open and edit my vsp files but the 'file format mismatch' problem still remains. Its an mp4 file that plays just fine on QuickTime, Windows Media Player, Nero, etc and one that I had no problems with prior to the new pc. Interestingly enough, I can import the mp4 file directly into my library and play it on preview but VS will not re-link it in the timeline no matter what. Any ideas on how to re-link the clip without having to go back through the original file to cut out the section I need??

Hi
As you can play from the library at least VS is not crashing there.
From Windows Explorer create a copy of the MP4 file
New Project Add that to the timeline, does that work ok?
making assumptions.....
Original project, from the timeline, can you remember if you have applied any filters, timelapse etc. to the clip.
There have been problems re-linking to a Timelapsed clip
Replace Clip……may remove the timelapse edits but should retain the actual cuts.
Try dragging the library clip to the timeline, float over the MP4 clip on the timeline and press Ctrl key
That should / may replace clip.
There may also be an option by right clicking the clip and choosing replace.

Re: Audio Ducking Crashes VSX8.5
Ultimately, though, you might need to think about using an external video conversion program to convert the problem mp4 into a more standard -- and thus acceptable -- mp4. Some smartphones and cameras these days can be set to non-standard frame sizes, and some even use non-standard and variable frame rates, both of which VS cannot handle, even though it might be able to initially play them in Clip mode. Clip mode merely plays them as they are. But once you go into Project mode, the Project Properties are applied to the clip, and VS finds it is not possible to "bend" such clips to meet the Project Properties, and instead crashes.
There are quite a few video converters out there. Some of us here use Format Factory successfully, including for this specific purpose. Just be careful when installing it to read each page of the installation process as it offers to install various unnecessary things like unwanted toolbars etc.
Once it is installed, select MP4 as the output format and make sure the Properties for it are high definition -- I always choose "AVC High quality and size". It is quick, and should give you a new clip whose quality appears the same as the original, but should now be accepted by VS.

Re: Audio Ducking Crashes VSX8.5
Thanks for all the input guys. I've never really had problems with the source of my MP4's as they are usually from high quality sources. I actually have more 'file format mismatch' errors with mov files. I'm not quite sure why I seem to be having so many issues installing VSX8 or re-linking my assets. I tried changing the name of the file, moving it to another location, using Nero to recode it to another format (avi, mov, mp4) but none of it worked for some reason. I then remembered that I had a copy of the mp4 in question on a backup hard drive so I copied the file into the same folder as the original- and it worked! Why did that work when nothing else did? Your guess is a good as mine. But at least for now I'm back to editing my project- until the 'file format mismatch' comes along and I'm back to square one again. Thanks again for all you help- its much appreciated.

That's possibly/probably because .mov gives you more opportunity for strange formats to creep in. As you may be aware, .mov is just a wrapper extension which can cover a rather wide range of formats.inyour4head wrote: I actually have more 'file format mismatch' errors with mov files.
