If I read correctly the Save command does a Save As once per session but only in ADJUST mode and not in EDIT mode.
Why would Corel change that on a local level in Adjust and not globally in all modes (Manage, Adjust and Edit)
I would say that many of your most faithful PSP users have come through from the Jasc versions of PSP and some Corel versions since and for them Edit mode is the king and should be as faithful to the early iterations of PSP as possible.
I have purchased 2 copies of X2, X4-X7 to use on many computers. This version X8 is the first one that I may only purchase one copy of as I will continue to use the earlier versions because of the crippled Save in Edit mode.
There are other bugs that only occur if you use a particular tool and so not everyone comes across it. But everyone who does editing has to Save / Save As at one stage in their image processing. To change the Save and make it do the same as a Save As (in Edit mode) borders on idiocy.

I will continue to use PSP X2 for my power processing of lots of images.

Oh no. What nonsense .
I'll X8 delete and continue working with x2 .

I feel maybe I am not quite understanding something with regard to this issue so please excuse me if this is a dumb newbie question, but can't we just write a script that does a file save with a pre-select compression level for JPG's and bind it to a button? Would this not provide a satisfactory workaround for this issue?

I did do that gbotes. It's in the scripting section. Call X8 Silent Save. You can also just hold the Shift key when clicking on the normal save button. This forces it to run silently so the dialog will never pop up.

However, not everyone would think to do this. Or knows how to do it. Or wants to do it. It also doesn't solve all instances of trying to save images. Photoshop does a very similar thing by popping up JPEG options if you hit Save. However, it doesn't open the Save As dialog. And it doesn't ask if you're sure you want to overwrite. So it's only one more click compared to PSP's two per image. And people have already gotten used to and developed very fast workflows around PSP's original "Save just saves" policy. They've said it many many times throughout this discussion. If you edit large numbers of images quickly and just want to Save, this adds full seconds to the process which can add minutes or hours depending up on the number of images you're processing the more times you do it.

Thanks, LeviFiction. I thought I remembered seeing a silent save but wasn't sure. Your explanation is quite clear, and I understand now.

Good stuff with that script, LeviFiction. I've been silently following this thread and trusted that you might just decide to write a workaround script to solve everybody's concerns. Corel needs users like you on their feature implantation staff. :-)

LeviFiction wrote:Not exactly the same thing. The Save As dialog only pops up when you click save if 1) You're saving to JPG and 2) It's the first time you've saved the image. As this topic has mentioned, they did this to allow you to set the compression setting so that you don't automatically hit save and lose image size as so many people seem to do the first time they use PSP.

If you are doing a large edit and making progressive saves, the Save button will only pop up the Save As dialog once. While annoying for most everyone. It's for everyone who only ever saves ones that this becomes the biggest nuisance.

I know this thread is old but I've only just discovered this super irritating problem after upgrading from X7. What a PITA it is.

It might go away after the 'first save' of a sequence of edits on one image but as others have pointed out if you wish to do 2/3 edits on a series of shots as I often do I have to go through this dumba** 'Save As' on every image.

It's nice that someone does a script to work around this but we shouldn't have to be messing around with scripts. I'm baffled as to how Corel think this makes most users happy. Back to X7 then, which fortunately is ok by me.

I agree totally. After a couple of automatic updates over the past months, this is still not fixed. I continue to use X7 and will not upgrade to any new versions until this is fixed.

And if I remember this variation was introduced because the Save had a default value of 20. Wouldn't the simplest solution have been to have the default at 0.

Then if still wanting to make it foolproof , in preferences have a setting which must be ticked "Use same compression as Save As". When this is unticked it reverts back to 0

Today, we have reached more than 8000 Views for this thread...
I suspect this feature is a real problem for many users.
I hope Corel will understand that something is wrong and that a modification is needed...

Unfortunately, SP2, which has just been released -- http://www.paintshoppro.com/en/support/updates/ -- makes no change to this situation regarding Save/Save As.

Yeah, what a bummer - perhaps we need double the number of comments that we have in this thread to get a reaction.

When you do "Save" using the file menu, i do understand the openning of the dialog box.
But at least, when you use keyboard shortcut CTRL+S or the icon in tools bar, you should have an instand save : this is the way Windows environment always works !
First i discovered that pspx8 does not respect the main application top bar, now i discovered pspx8 does not respect the Save global feature of the OS common procedure.

If i was a microsoft licence certification manager or main controler, i will put away the logo "certified for MS windows" on the box.
what is next ? use only one button on the mouse ? have bottom bar with big icon like apple ?

i really hope Corel knows how much they failed the common usages.
i'm a Paintshop pro user since 1999 on windows 3.11 until now with psp2018 on Win7 X64
