Re: "File Save" does "Save-As" instead
The default jpeg compression in PSP goes back a very very long time when hard drives were much smaller and more expensive and you had to be careful not to fill up your drive. Then users starting using the newly available external hard drives to provide additional storage. Today though, relatively large hard drives are the norm, and there is no reason the default compression should not be set to it's lowest or NONE. If a user needs to compress for web use etc., they can use other tools like the Jpeg Optimizer.
Rather than continuing to confuse users with the default jpeg compression in Save, Corel just needs to re- do the default to lowest or none and let the option be to increase compression if desired.

I agree completely. If PSP developers are worried about inexperienced users losing image quality, they should set the default compression value to zero. And restore the simple "Save" function.

Re: "File Save" does "Save-As" instead
This procedure that Corel has started is out of touch with many programs including word processors, and other graphics programs where you can use File > Save As or click the Save As button if you want a temporary save with a number or want to use a different name.
But they all have the direct File Save or a Save button where it overwrites the starting file, or named file. This is so useful if you are wanting to leave your computer in a hurry and just want the document saved as is.
Again an option in preferences where you can set the Save compression would be the optimum solution, not a fixed figure of none, or 5% compression decided by Corel programmers.

Just to keep you in the loop, I have drawn this thread to the attention of the Corel execs who look after PSP. They have said they will study the issue closely. Hopefully this might lead to a change along the lines suggested above.

We will be forwarding this concern to our development team so that they could review and consider options for this kind of setting in the next update.

A "little annoying"
You people must be kidding. If I had known of this UPDATE I would NEVER have bought X8.
How can some clueless boso just increase people workflow to such an extent and think "they will get used to it" AND NOT EVEN GIVE A SETTING SO YOU CAN TURN IT OFF.
Talk about lack of customer focus and concern, well that's it, I am really sick and tied of some programmer thinking "this is a great idea to piss off most of our users"
Well done, you have succeeded

I haven't heard anything and have since gotten a refund, a first since upgrading for years.
Perhaps Corel can learn a lesson from the following: http://www.cnet.com/news/adobe-to-undo- ... mer-wrath/

I too plan to ask for a refund if this is not corrected soon. This is BS when dealing with a lot of photos. Totally inconsistent with how other windows programs I use work.
Save should just save, no questions asked.
Save As if you want to change a bunch of things.
In the meanwhile I am going to reinstall my last version of PaintShop Pro.

Re: "File Save" does "Save-As" instead
As was pointed out, after you save and tell it what compression level you want it won't ask again. So it's only the first time. I do agree that it would be easier if we just had a universal option in our settings though.
If you don't mind it saving automatically at a compression level of 20 there is a way to avoid that dialog though. This is purely a workaround not a solution.
Hold Shift while saving.
When holding SHIFT on your keyboard it tells PSP to run a command silently. And silently will always run the command with the default or last used settings depending on the command. And you only have to do it once. After the initial "Save As" is run silently it won't ask again for that image.

Re: "File Save" does "Save-As" instead
Yeah, but how many times do you save the same image?
I open batches of images, make changes and save them and move to the next image. It doesn't matter to me that I only have to go through the procedure just once. I only save the image once!
Really, this has to be addressed and made optional at the very least and we should get control over the percentage of standard compression. It's very simple, someone at Corel just needs to say, let's do it. Only then will I repurchase the upgrade.
X7 is working fine on Windows 10, it installed fine on Windows 10, so this combination can last for a very long time if needed.

Re: "File Save" does "Save-As" instead
To give people a better idea of the problem :
1. you are doing individual crops of 50 images so that they fit 1024 x 768 for data projection.
2. in each image you move the crop rectangle in or out or left , right up down to produce the best picture, then hit Save.
In my case for speed I run in windowed mode and when the crop area is made hit Enter key to accept, then hit the red cross to close the image, then hit enter again and the image gets saved over the top of the original copy. (I copy the images to a working folder - never work on original)
This works in X2 and X7 , however in X8 after I hit the red cross, and hit Enter the Save As dialog opens up, and I have to then click Save and another dialog pops up reminding me that that file already exists, so I have to click the Yes and then the final save is done.
That's two extra clicks, two extra dialog boxes that pop up.
To compare times I did the same 10 images and timed them
X2 84 sec
X7 100 sec
X8 144 sec

Re: "File Save" does "Save-As" instead
Just a thought, but couldn't you record a script to just automate the stuff for each image? You might need Gary Barton's Pause Script to allow you to arrange your crop rectangle to your satisfaction but then clicking the script again should be able to complete the rest of the process, including the save dialogues. In fact, it might save you clicks even in versions prior to X8 that don't have so many save dialogues. Just a thought.hartpaul wrote:To give people a better idea of the problem :

Re: "File Save" does "Save-As" instead
Any extra clicking and navigation to extra areas is a pain and takes extra time. Currently I select the crop tool once and as each image is saved and disappears from the screen the next image already has the crop rectangle present .
Currently:
1. select crop tool (with preset already chosen) = navigate and 1 click
2. adjust crop rectangle
3. Hit enter
4. Hit Red X = navigate and 1 click
5. Hit Enter
Total 2 navigates 2 clicks 2 enters. (the left index finger remains over the Enter key so don't even have to look down at the keyboard.)
6. repeat from 2 to 5 (So second image is one less navigate and click as don't have to go to the crop tool each time)
With a script
1. navigate to script bar and click Start = navigate and 1 click
2. Adjust crop rectangle
3. Hit Enter
4. hit Enter (Save As dialog)
5. Navigate to Yes ( file already exists so overwrite) and 1 click
6 Repeat from 1 (so each image has the same number of operations = no saving in time)
Total 2 navigates, 2 enters, 2 clicks so the same, but have to navigate to the script bar each time to get the crop to show. So no real saving.
Only proper fix is to revert to former use of Save and provide ability to set compression for this once and also remove the Save for those that need protection from inadvertent saves.
X8 involves an extra 1 minute over the X2 save that's an extra 84% increase in time . An extra minute over 10 images.
Last night in X2 I processed over 700 images and in X8 that would have taken me an extra 70 minutes to process so it is not an insignificant bug/ feature - just an ill thought out addition by Corel programmers.
If it aint broke don't try and fix it.
