I see another difference in the "Save As" and "Save Copy As" dialogues between X7 and X8 when saving as jpg format that I like in X8.

If you choose "Save As" or "Save Copy As" in X8 and want to save in jpg format, the dialogue that opens is almost identical to that of X7 except that it includes a compression slider that also displays the file size resulting from choosing different compression levels. That dialogue in X7 does not have this feature.

If you click on the Options button in each program the Save Options dialogue is identical in both, and the compression slider does not show the resultant file size as you change compression levels in either program.

Clicking the "Run Optimizer" button in either program results in an Optimizer window that is identical in both and which does show resultant file sizes as the compression slider is moved. That's several dialogues down to just be able to set a compression level with a desired file size.

I find the compression feature in the first "Save As" and "Save Copy As" dialogues in X8 a handy feature when I only need to determine the compression level and resulting file size, because if I have previously set my generally used desired jpg options in the subsequent dialogues (e.g., no chroma subsampling, standard encoding, whether or not to save Exif date, etc) then I only have to use the first Save As dialogue box to set my compression and be able to view the resultant file size and then save the image to a selected folder when saving jpgs. That's an improvement IMHO.

I don't use the simple "Save" option for any files or file formats simply because of the possibility of doing something unintended by using it without thinking of possible unwanted consequences. The other two options get my attention and make me think before saving stuff - e.g.,where it will be saved, whether or not it might inadvertently overwrite something I might not want overwritten, whether I actually want to use my default options in this particular project, etc. Simply my workflow preferences. :-)

X8 is the first version of PSP that I'm using. It's very different from what I'm used to. As I'm working with it, I'm starting to overcome my initial gripes and the application is growing on me. I really like Perfectly Clear in X8 Pro, and I'm finding Aftershot 2 very useful. Magic Move is also pretty amazing. I'm finding PSP quite speedy considering that I'm working on 24 megapixel images usually with lots of layers.

Wow! The RAW Lab isn't kludgy anymore. Use to be painful to use, but now it's rather zippy. And how handy to have a Resize button on the toolbar. Of all the different photo editing programs I have, I like PSP best for resizing...and now it's just that more convenient to use. (oh. it was there on the older version, but I just didn't notice it. Oh well...)

Loving the faster speed and smoother operation.

Don't forget that if there are other things you'd like as a button on the toolbar, or even separate toolbars for specific actions, you can customize the existing toolbars by adding, moving or removing buttons and/or create your own extra toolbars. :-)

But not in Adjust mode, Joe B -- no customizable toolbars there. I use PSP mainly for photography, so use the Adjust mode all the time. I find its tools much easier for tweaking photos than the Edit mode.

On the whole, though, I am loving X8. It is a joy to use -- so smooth & zippy. Really glad I upgraded.

i can't speak for X7 to X8 as the last PSP version i ever used was PSP7 but compared to other RAW processing software i've used it's just... not good

camera raw in photoshop updates the preview in real time as i adjust the sliders
after shot 2 does it in some low res semi-realtime where the image goes blurry while adjusting sliders
raw lab in psp waits until i stop moving the slider, gives a progress bar, then updates the preview

if there is some kind of setting i can check to make it go full realtime i'd be much happier with it

i will say i really like the resize function primarily how it gives some more fine control over the sharpness/smoothness of the resampling vs photoshop having a handful of presets.. and the bundled perfectly clear is nice and i see myself using it quite a bit

Been using it about a month

It works - most of the time - Occasionally (maybe one in ten sessions) it crashes. Such a bother. Recovers well but fails much more often than X7 did.

Have not loaded it with plug ins yet. (other than perfect which it came with).

Have to figure out if I can get the Topaz plug in I bought for X7 to load into X8 - have not started to look into how to do that.

Nothing spectacular as far as I can tell but I'm not a power user by any stretch.

I like that they have put Swatches back in the Material Properties, but you can't copy the html color code without going back to either Wheel or Slider. So it's only done half-way.

This isn't specific to X8, but I finally discovered the Tone Mapping slider in the Adjust tab. Just a little bit of tone mapping (5-10 on the slider amount) gives my photos some oomph. Not the least bit artificial looking, either! I guess it boosts the dynamic range a little? Not sure what it does exactly, but it's nice.

Is Tone Mapping available in the Editing tab? I looked in the menus, but didn't see it.

It's under Adjust -> Bightness & Contrast -> Local Tone Mapping in Edit Mode.

Thanks, Levi. I also found it in the Enhance Photo pull down menu, and I also found the icon to put on my tool bar (View...Customize...Commands...)

I would like to get a hotfix or servicepack to REMOVE the must hold shift for file save click!
Or is there a workaround ? This is really making me crazy! Change something that is totally against every other app and every other workflow for decades.

I enjoy using the Border Selection tool located under "Selections-Modify-Select Border Selection. I just wish it had the option to automatically add a filled border instead of needing to use the paint bucket to fill. I also use the Pattern Maker, but it needs some updates as it does not make good patterns for creating Coloring Books pages. The Kaleidoscope is great, I use that all the time. Like to see some added features for creating patterns of abstract and spirograph. Coloring books are big with designers and we are looking for different ways to create patterns for coloring books. Maybe add more shapes to the preset for creating images that could be used for coloring books. Have a effect for creating zentangle patterns would be so awesome and would make a great feature for designers that like to create patterns.
