How to use KPT filter turbulence?

Post by cookie1234 »

I can't seem to figure out how to control turbulence to get the desired effect. For example, when I touch the preview screen using my own image, I do get "waves" but by the
time I can get to the stop button, the image reverts back to original. (I have tried all kinds of speeds with this.) I read through the help screen, but cannot figure out how to
make the colorful wave that is shown in the help instructions. Use of the top row of presets (which I think are the only ones that retain use of MY image) blurs my image far too much.
The Internet seems to be of no help re: tutorial. Can you help?

I don't have that filter and don't know if your issue might or might not be the result of your version of PSP. Perhaps you could post the PSP version you use and - even better - add that to your profile so that we can see it in the box at the right of your posts.

JoeB, the KPT plugins are an extra download that has been provided with all versions of PSP since version X4. It was originally only available in full with X3 Ultimate. They are also only 32-bit plugins. So you will have had to have installed the KPT plugins and be using the 32-bit version of PSP to see them.

Unfortunately I too have never gotten the turbulence plugin to work right. So I'm of no help there.

Guess I need fewer plugins! :-) I just checked and I do, in fact, have KPT installed, just don't recall having used the filters in years! So I just gave Turbulence a quick run and also have issues, the main one being the speed of the effect as originally reported. I resized to the larges preview window and, using the top right preset with brush flow at minus 100, size 20 (on a 4100x2300 pixel image) I slowed the process down considerably. I was also able to step through using the right arrow, and smoothly continue by keeping that arrow pressed. Releasing it stopped the effect at that point and clicking the checkmark applied the effect to my image. There was a default preset that originally appeared when I first tried using the filter but I had problems with that (couldn't see much of my image underneath it) which is why I randomly selected the preset that worked.

So that's all the info I have for now.

Thanks JoeB for the suggestion. At least I got the image moving without so much blur. I do get better luck, however, on a much smaller image. I think I'm a long way away
from making the waves, however. I'll keep trying.

I suspect we'll both have to spend much more time experimenting with the options and sliders in this filter to finally figure out what works best for different images.

I recall from long ago that there used to be several free plugins that produced various water effects, but don't recall which ones they were off hand. Also, I don't know the exact effect that you're trying to a achieve. Redfield has a free Water Ripples plugin that's available here:

http://www.redfieldplugins.com/filterWaterRipples.htm

Sqirls has an interesting free program called Sqirlz Water Reflections that can apply water effects. It used to be a plugin but now seems to operate as a standalone, although maybe there is a way to add it as a plugin but as it can work on lossless file formats that isn't a big problem, just less convenient. In any event the best place to get it is at the Softonic link below. The reason for this is that some google searches for it end up taking you to Tucows for the download and my anti-virus did not like the download from there but it is safe and installs well from the Softonic site here:

http://sqirlz-water-reflections.en.softonic.com/

Flaming Pear has a Flood plugin but it's not free, although they do have a demo available.

Hope that helps.
