PSP does not start after upgrade to Win 10

Post by borni »

I have PSP 9, PSP X2 and PSP X6 on my PC, recently upgraded from win 7 to Win 10. During first week after upgrade, all of them had startup problems, but they would start on a few rare occasions, normally only after several attempts. Now, since more than a week, I have not been able to start any of them at all. PSP X2 comes as far as showing the startup screen and then locks, the other two do not start at all. Trying to start in compatibility mode has no effect. I can imagine PSP9 may have problem since it is old, but X6 and X2 should work. Corel has zero info on Win 10 on their site.
What should I do?
About my PC: A Fuji laptop, Intel Core i5 2450M 2.50 GHz, 64-bit system, 4.00 GB RAM.

I know nothing about Windows 10 but I have had similar issues with Windows 7 when the program was still running in the background. Have you checked the Task Manager to see if PSP is running in the background? If so, end the process and then try to start it normally.

According to Corel, only X7 and X8 are compatible with Windows 10. You may try running previous versions but you may run into problems.

Yes, problems there are. Yesterday night, after a more than a week long refusal to start, all of my PSPs started again. But this morning, it was back to normal, or should I say abnormal. What makes the difference from one occasion to the next no one knows.

Corel, of course, must have known long before the release of Win 10, that X6 and older would not work. Did they warn there users, so that those who wanted could stay away from Win 10? Of course not. Do they to this day say anything about it on their site? No.

It is better to sell more upgrades!

There is a difference between knowing that a new OS is coming and being able to code a program to be compatible. They knew early last year what the OS would be and how to work with it, which meant that they coded X7 accordingly. As for anyone using older program, i doubt any company is expected to test all the versions to warn users that their "old" products might not work on "newer technology" that is NOT theirs. That is something a user should consider themselves.

Some people will be able to run older versions on newer OS, some won't. Some people would be able to run newer versions on older OS, some won't.
So, in many cases it would mean "give it a try and see if it will work for you".

Yes, you can always say that. Given the massive scale of introduction of Win 10 and the way it has been done, the rather modest effort it would take to check at least one generation back if their software would even start, and the complete silence on the matter on Corel´s site, anyone can have his or her own opinion on whether Corel´s policy represents good customer care or not.

Hello!
I'm a brand-new 88-year-old newbie to this forum. In the process of searching for my problem, I happened to run across this post. I have been running Windows 10 on another machine since day one of the release of the beta Executive Preview the first one. Although I am not a professional and I did not have the opportunity to test Windows 10 as I would have liked to because of my health. I will say that I installed Paint Shop Pro 9.1 on the first release and also Paint Shop Pro X5 and did not have serious problems. After the release of 10240 the final copy of Windows 10, I then installed Paint Shop Pro X3 and have never gotten it to run. I later installed Paint Shop Pro X and Paint Shop Pro X 2 and what I have learned from that is, by right clicking on the desktop icon, on the next line the pop-up menu after Run As Administrator, click it on the line, Troubleshoot Compatibility. The next menu, Select Troubleshooting Option. I use the first one, Try Recommended Settings. You then have the option of running the PSP as far back as the Windows XP mode. That is what I tried. I have not had the opportunity to check them out as much as I would like to because of health, but both PSP 10 and PSP 12 launches properly
