I have made a disk image file and used it to create DVDs of my latest project.
Can I use this file to create the project on a USB drive, or must I render again in a different format. If so, is it better to use MPEG 2 or MPEG4 and why?
What about if I want to put the project on my I-Pad. Which format do I use then?

The bottom line is - what formats do the devices you intend to use the USB stick on support
for instance my DVD player which has a USB port will not play a USB stick with any thing other than plain mpeg-2 videos on it - no menus or chapters
so on my player a USB stick with a burnt disc image on it would be no use at all
For my i-pad I use mp4 video

If the iso file on your external USB drive is to be played by VLC media player on your HDTV, then maybe it will play. But VLC is one of the few media players which will play an ISO file firect. Better to just prepare either an mpeg-2 or mp4 of your project for direct play, without menu as Brian suggests.
Have no idea what an iPad will play, but my own Google and Win 8.1 tablets will both play mp4 happily, as Brian has also already suggested.
