PSP X7 brush slowness

Been noticing a quirk when using various tools, lets take the paint brush, in using large brushes, the slower the painting gets until it reaches a point where you move the brush and wait a second or two for the stroke to "catch up".

Any fix for this? some setting I need to increase or decrease?

I understand what you are saying and I've been saying to Corel that this is a problem with brushes for quite some time. I know of no way to fix it and seems the developers don't either. I cannot use a large canvas or brush in PSP due to the terrible lag and I have a good PC with lots of umph!

As long as I've used brushes in PSP (9 - X5) I have always noticed the massive lag in the brush. Someone said to increase the step for larger brushes on another forum, but I tried that today and it still lagged like crazy.

The only downfall I've found with PSP compared to PS is the brushes IMO. PS you don't have the lagging brushes...and the lack of a preview of the brushes with the different brush settings.

Thanks for the replies, yes it is a exasperating thing. I noticed in the ads for X8 they said something about it being faster, wonder if that includes our brush problem? I just got done with a trial of PS Elements and it didn't have such a problem, neither does Gimp. Not that I'm going to stop using PSP, I love the program otherwise, I just wish something could be done about the lag problem.

I long ago gave up trying to use a large brush. Many smaller strokes is much quicker.

PSP x7's brushes do lag quite a bit as they did in previous versions. The 30% or so speed up (they claimed) of extremely slow and lagging still amounts to very slow and lagging. I have tried x8 and the brushes are much faster. Task manager x7 using a brush on a 48 bit multi-layered 2 gig file, base image 35 megapixel, i3 processor: hyper-threading on - 25 % utilization max, hyper-threading off - 50% utilization max; task manager x8: hyper-threading off - 97% utilization. The data suggests multiple processes are being used in x8 vs x7 (and earlier).

I don't believe the i5 model you have is hyper-threaded ... it's slow because your using 1 core. In case anyone else happens to read this and it is applicable to them: turn off the hyper-threading in x7 and you'll see a speed up with larger files ... layers, brushes, global adjustments (task manager: maxes out at 50% vs 25%. In x8, neither layers or global adjustments seem to have the same kind of enhancement and should benefit from hyper-threading off as well.

One way to work around lag in brushes is to increase the step. If you are using a large brush, you likely don't need to set the step at 1. Try it at 10 or 50 (depending on the size of the brush).

It can make a significant difference.
