Studio x8 still crashing
OK I'm about to give up on this 'great' software.
I've had the program 'stop working' each time I edited a clip. Change exposure. I changed my work flow and I thought I had that beat.
Now every time I try to share/save I get a 'stopped working' notice.
I'm using files from a GoPro. MP4. I load several clips. Edit them and all seems fine. Then in Share I saved them as MPEG-4 files. Everything was again fine. However I was getting a lot of jerky results. So I repeated the procedure this time checking the box and selected 'Same as first video clip'. Crash and stopped working. So I repeated selecting 'same as project settings'. No crash but nothing will play the MPEG4 file that results.
Or should I simply stick with saving as MPEG-4 and try to ignore the jerky results?
So what is happening? What part of my brain is missing something?
I have wasted hours on this and I'm not a happy chappy.

Re: Studio x8 still crashing
I regularly edit my own GoPro footage and never have these problems. Part of your problem may be because these clips use the .mp4 extension though in reality they are AVCHD and produced using the h.264 codec. This makes them significantly different from the properties of the mpeg-4 you are seeking to output.
Try this instead. First go to Preferences -- General and tick the box beside 'Show message when inserting first video clip'. Then start a new project and insert one of the original clips. You should get a message asking if you want the Project Properties to match those of the clip. Accept this. Insert the rest of your clips, do your editing, and when satisfied choose Share -- Same as Project Properties. This time hopefully you will get smooth, high quality video which looks exactly the same as the original.

Re: Studio x8 still crashing
Thanks Ken.
Followed your instructions to the letter. I got 12% of the file saved and got the dreaded 'stopped working' message.
I closed Studio and started again. Again following your steps again. Worked like a dream.
Then repeated and it 'stopped working' again!!
Also following your steps I don't get the 'Show message when inserting first video clip'. I did the first time and I haven't checked the box!
Hmmmmm?

Re: Studio x8 still crashing
OK I've uninstalled and done a reinstall. Rubbish.
9 out of 10 attempts to render/save a file fail. 'stopped working'. (It's a new i5 with 8gig of ram).
A complete waste of money and time. I said I wouldn't buy it but changed my mind. I'm sorry I didn't follow my instincts.
If it failed every time I would suspect a problem with my setup. But because it's inconsistent I believe it's an issue with Studio. I can perform the exact same tasks and get an end result only 10% of the time. (Ken I check the 'show message when inserting first video into Timeline'. I only ever got the message once and I didn't change it's setting).
I have 950 clips to edit and have done almost none.

Did you click the YES box?
I cannot believe that VS is a fault. There are thousands of copies out there that run without problem. I have edited files from my Denver Actioncam (mp4) without problem. Does your PC spec match the spec given by Corel to run VS X8?

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

I'm at a loss to know what might be happening in your case. I don't think you need worry about Terfyn's question about your system specs. They are fine. I often editing my GoPro footage on an i3 with 8 GB of RAM and at the time it was running Win 8.1. But as he said, there are lots of others out there editing GoPro footage who, like me, don't have these sorts of problems. The ones who do, IIRC, are people who have set their Hero to record in what VS might regard as 'strange' frame sizes such as 1280 x 960. They have sent samples of this video and I too have had trouble with it. All I could suggest was to do as I did and set it to render using the more 'standard' setting of 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080. FWIW, I always leave my Hero 3 set at 1920 x 1080 and 50P.
Not sure exactly what you meant here. You only get the message once when you start a new project and insert the first clip. It doesn't work if you are in an existing project. At the risk of repetition, it has to be new project/first clip.I only ever got the message once and I didn't change it's setting

Re: Studio x8 still crashing
Thanks Ken.
I open Studio x8. Open Settings/Preferences. Check the 'Show Message when inserting first video clip into Timeline'.
Close Studio to make sure the settings are set.
Open Studio x8.
Hit New Project. Load 1 file and drag it into the Timeline. The very first time I did this I got the message but never again. And I never checked the 'don't show this again' box.
So here is where something is going wrong! Why has that message gone?
I recheck the setting/preference and it's still checked.
So my first question is "is there a reset button for Studio x8 that will restore all defaults?
Second. When I finish with a project how can I clean the slate to ensure that I'm starting fresh?
It's as though the action in moving the first file into the timeline is carrying over for all projects.
When I restart Studio x8 the last project reappears as though I was still working on it!
I've deleted everything but I suspect that is only removing the clips and not closing the project.
Studio works fine if I choose MPEG4 in the Share/Save stage. But as I said my issue started when I tried to address the jerky results.

Re: Studio x8 still crashing
What are the exact properties of the clips you are using. Please right click on one in the VS timeline or library windows, and copy ALL Properties here, or take a screen grab of the Properties box and upload it here as an attachment. Do all the clips involved have the same Properties?
As for resetting the program, the only way I know how is to go to C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro (x64)\18.0 (or Corel VideoStudio Pro\18.0 if 32 bit) and change 18.0 to 18.0_OLD. Then restart the program. This should then rebuild all the active bits, though it won't take long.

Re: Studio x8 still crashing
Hi Ken.
I've been down the rename 18.0 folder route. That didn't help.
I have two different computers so a screen grab is difficult.
So here's what I have in Properties.
File format - MPEG-4 file
file size - 128,778kb (125meg).
duration - 69 seconds.
video
video type H.264 main profile video
total frames - 1725 (frames)
attributes - 24 bits, 1920x1080, 16.9
frame rate - 25.000 frames/second
data size - 14625 kbs
audio
audio type - MPEG AAC Audio.
total sample - 3,311,616 sample
attributes - 48000 Hz 16 bit stereo
bit rate - 128 kbps.
The above is a random sample but one of the clips I've been trying to use.
As I said. Sharing/saving as MPEG-4 is fine but I'm getting a jerky result. Not always but enough to be a pain. I need to assemble the results of 950 clips taken in the USA over the past 4 months. I may just have to accept what I'm getting. But I would like to know why my first clip is not throwing up the message.
Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.
