I agree totally with your position on this. I put up with ads within free apps on my smartphone because that's how the app developers can give me the app for free. If I don't want the ads I will pay for the app, which in all the apps I use means, at the very least, the ads are removed. I expect the same with programs I use on my computer.

Sounds very much like pay tv. Pay your monthly fees to watch advertisements!!! Web sites that won't load unless you allow popups for advertisements.
I'm afraid it's the way of the future.

But. But there are lots of alternatives out there. So it's a consumer choice. One of the very reasons Photoline is now my editor of choice with PSP as a backup.

Don't complain about the ads -- the trick is to know how to use them. I have noticed that if you start (or exit, it depends) a really old version there will occasionally be a phenomenal upgrade offer.

For instance, years ago I bought VideoStudio 3 Essentials (or got it as an "extra", I don't recall). I basically don't work with videos at all. A few weeks ago I wanted to take a few minutes off a DVD of a live performance and upload it to YouTube. Most of the programs I have wouldn't work. Out of curiosity I opened VS3E. When I closed it an ad popped up for VS X9 Ultimate -- for $15! So I bought it and used that.

My computer at work still has PSP X3. Usually when I exit it pops up an offer to buy X8 Ultimate (now also X9 Ultimate) for $25% off ($59.99). But I have seen a few times where it offered X8 Ultimate for $24.99. You won't see the massive discounts with a recent version, but it's worth keeping one very old version installed and opening it occasionally. (By the way, you may have to open and close it up to 5 times to get an ad. It might help to keep it open several minutes and wait several minutes each time you close it, but I'm not sure.)

Maybe having one popup ad for an upgrade discount when exiting the program is not the worst thing in the world. But having ads within the program, like in the brush presets dialogue, is beyond the pale IMHO.

My wishlist:

- 100% Photoshop plugin support (and especially for Nik plugins)
- Tool to create a sheet of passport pictures
- Option to hide all toolbars and palettes with a keyboard shortcut (like Tab in PS)

Plugin support is in the hands of the plugin developers, who determine which programs their plugins will support with how they code the plugin.

You can use the Print Layout to create sheets of anything - business cards, photos, etc.

I used to have a script that worked with Jasc's PSP9 that hid toolbars. It doesn't work with X7 because the tools are different, but perhaps one could be created for newer PSP versions.

I didn't release that thank you very much :)

About plugins: It's true that plugins support is mostly in the hands of the developers of the plugins, however, there's more to it. PSP does not support every function in the Adobe Plugin SDK. One plugin developer has complained to Corel that he cannot access EXIF data using the normal plugin methods that are available to Adobe. In fact he had to make a special script that would first export the EXIF data to a file, then ran the plugin, the plugin would then load the file. At the same time some of the plugin SDK cannot be fully supported by PSP because it relies on very specific functions that are Adobe specific.

So Plugins in PSP can never be 100% supported on the Adobe SDK. PSP does not support all functions that it could support in the SDK. And Plugin developers can determine that their plugins will only work with software that identifies itself as a valid plugin host.

It's very convoluted.

I also use PaintShop Pro since 7.04 Anniversary, X6 ..but still looking for alternatives also before I decide what next.

That is the Affinity Designer program (a vector illustration program), not the Affinity Photo photo editing program....

Since you're looking for alternatives to PSP, PhotoLine should definitely be on your short list (but you knew I would say that :D ).

A good example is Smart Photo Editor. I took a chance and ordered the version that can work as a Photoshop or Photoshop Elements plugin. It turns out it works fine with PSP. I contacted the company that develops it and they said it only works with PS and PSE, not PSP. I sent them a screenshot showing it working under PSP and how to install it. Their response was, "Even if it works for you it might not work for others," and they only support it for PS and PSE.

improve of speed if you're working with >20 megapixels photos. It's quite frustating the slowness at this stage.

zebios if you are having trouble with 20 meg files then something is wrong!! I habitually work with 200+meg files and have few speed issues.
