VideoStudio Pro X6 will not accept MPEG-TS files

Post by hanlen »

I often edit video files from a Topfield PVR which are in PAL MPEG-TS format. For short clips it's hit and miss if VS X6 will load the file or just hang. For long videos such as movies it just hangs and I have to use the Task Manager to kill VS. I did have the same problem with Adobe Premiere Elements 12 but I didn't like that program anyway.

While I might simply discount this as some form of incompatibility, I have never, ever, had problems loading these files into AVS4YOU software. However AVS4YOU software is not a substitute for VS X6 especially when it comes to working with interlaced video.

AVS4YOU has a ReMake option which extracts the the video but does NOT render it. When using this option to generate a MPG file, VS X6 loads and processes the file perfectly. Unfortunately the AVS4YOU ReMaker program renders the audio to 128kbps so I lose audio quality. I've raised the audio issue with them but it's on their to-do list which is most likely never.

Can anyone suggest how VS X6 can accept MPEG-TS files or if there is a program which remuxes (I think is the right term) the video and audio to convert to MPG and retain the exact quality. I tried Quick MPEG splitter but it wouldn't load the MPEG-TS file either.

Thanks :(

If you will upload a 30sec PVR clip for us to try we might have ideas.
(I do have AVS 6.5)

and I have AVS 8.5 - which has the ability to actually convert complete videos to a number of other formats - but I do not have any mpeg-ts files - so if you do as asik has asked and upload a short sample somewhere we'll both see what we can do with it.

Well  as we are in video editor territory I was referring to AVS editor not converter.

It has couple of shticks up its sleeve that VS will benefit if "borrowed"

We were talking about converting video files so that we could edit them in Videostudio - so I use a converter - we do not need an editor - we have VS

What extension do the clips from the PVR use? I ask since it is unlikely to be '.mpeg-ts'. This in any case indicates that the clips are transport stream mpeg, though not whether they are mpeg-2 or mpeg-4. Video Studio should be able to handle both, though using either .mts or .m2ts as the extension. So I am wondering if just changing the existing extension to one of those might help, rather than having to resort to a converter. But if not, then as Brian's last image indicated, .m2ts would likely be the most appropriate format to choose.

Hi all,

After viewing all the replies I've been experimenting. Issues about AVS versions are not particularly relevant as the issue really is 1) AVD4YOU has no problems processing the files so why does VS X6 and 2) the only AVS4YOU application that does not render the video is ReMaker but it lowers the audio quality.

Well, I got VS X6 to work, at least partially. I successfully processed a standard definition PAL TV recording. The issue seems to be that all my videos are on external drives. Over the 2 years I've had this Windows 8/8.1 laptop I occasionally have problems with working with external drives and that wretched green progress bar analysing all my files. For example it might take 15 minutes to delete a 5GB video file. None of the suggestions on the forums seems to have solved the problem including a rebuild of my laptop. So I copied the files to the laptop's HDD and at least got underway.

I edited the SD PAL file without problems. But while editing an 8.4GB 1080i TV recording, VS X6 crashed (not responding) about 6 times as I got towards the end of the movie (taking small steps and keep saving the Project is the way to go). After I eventually finished editing, I could not create a video file or a DVD (at SD quality of course). VS X6 just hangs.I processed the same file with AVS4YOU video converter without trouble. Editing was very slow in a small section towards the end but it kept going.

VS did manage to process small HD TV recordings.

So it seems VS is working although large HD files appear to be a problem for it. On the point of HD files, there are limited HD output settings in VS and those I did process were far larger than the source files. I now need to look for software where I can vary the BR when rendering HD video files and keep the interlaced format.

By the way, VS states the properties for the PVR's HD video files are MPEG-2 (transport stream), 1440x1080, upper field first, VBR 15000kbps max and the audio is 5.1 channel Dolby Digital Audio, 48khz and 384kbps. The SD video is same but for 720x576 and the audio is MPEG audio layer, 2 channel, 256kbps. The file extension is MPG.

Cheers

I would say the problem is your very slow system and not VS. Deleting files is done by Windows and not by VS and if it is slow it again is your system
