plays perfectly - I see "try one more time" - with no errors or crashes.

I activated my NB plug-in - don't know if that makes the difference or not
Did you rendered Brian? My crashes were during render only

VS 8.5 installation program calls it "VideoStudio X8 Service Pack 2".

Unfortunately whatever stability issues are addressed by Corel VideoStudio X8.5, Heroglyph40RouteRender.dll still causes an APPCRASH in vstudio.exe when trying to render certain VSP files :(

Sorry but you don't give us much to work on. What are the "certain VSP files" you have trouble with? what is the format of the main video files? What filters or other effects have you applied? What are you trying to produce?

I was referring to the issue raised in the post entitled "Rotopen (Heroglyph40RouteRender.dll) causes APPCRASH‏".

Read this thread with interest, and went looking for it (8.5).

Noted that -
1. the links via the support tab from the main Corel site are just so old its not funny. X8 service packs/updates doesn't get a mention; HOWEVER
2. click on the products tab on the main site, choose VS and there's all the update details you could ask for. Including a download link for 8.5.

But the X8.5 update is HUGE. 360Mb. As compared to SP1, which was only 17Mb. A mere nothing compared to the size of the original X8, but as patches, services packs or updates go, this is pretty big.

Presumably, one starts installing it by clicking the filename. Does it create a totally new installation, or does it simply update the existing X8 item?

first download the X8.5 update package from http://www.videostudiopro.com/en/support/updates/

Start the download by clicking on the "32/64-bit" text in blue at the right hand side of the screen

once you have the file on your HDD either double click on it OR right click and choose 'Run' and installation will start

The package is an update - not an upgrade - so it will install INTO your existing version of X8 making it X8.5 and will show the version number 18.5.0.23

Brian,

Unless you've downloaded the file, there's no way of knowing how big it is. The only indicator - to me with a miserly slow internet connection - was that it seemed to take a long time coming. Which is why I checked the size when it was finished and very surprised at how big it was.

So, its installed.

Comments on it, about the installation practice and MyDVD (so far).
1. Back when Ulead owned VS, WinDVD was a product distributed with VS11.5+ or earlier versions. And there was some doco on how to use it. But within a year or 2 of the Corel takeover, WinDVD died out as a VS support product, probably around the time of the X3 disaster. Now, it seems that Corel thinks it's a good idea to resurrect that sort of product, but the miserable user interface MyDVD presents has no info on help of any sort (eg, how to use it), just buttons for 3 types of burn files (DVD, AVCHD and Bluray) and an open previous project button. Doing that just presents the windows navigator panel - what sort of project? a vsp? or something else?

Is there a help file or user guide on how to use this MyDVD thing? What advantage does it have over just using the facilities in the main VS X8 program?

2. The 8.5 upgrade doesn't follow the practice allowed for any user of the base version (which permits a choice of install location for programs). Which choice had been exercised would be evident in the registry data for the program. I choose to install on a separate physical drive to minimize the C: drive sizes: it helps contain the steady bloat in windows. In the case of myDVD - it just blasted onto the C drive without so much as a by-your-leave.

Combined with 1. above, not a good initial impression of MyDVD at all.

I'd have to agree about the weakness(es) of MyDVD. I thought it was merely a sop to those who might not have otherwise obtained the burning module of VS.

On the historical side, I think Ulead had well and truly gone by VS 11.5. I also thought MyDVD was an Intervideo product obtained when Corel took over Intervideo after it took over Ulead...

Thanks, Brian.

Interesting. A mini-editor - or an editor with very limited capability - but it seems to cover most of the major functional things VS does. However, if one is already using X8 (and this does come only with an update to that program) why would one use it?

As I said somewhere above, it provides a way to burn discs for those who have not bought the Corel integrated burner module....

Ken,

I mus be losing it somewhere. As far as I knew, the only part of the burner module not supplied with X8 was for blu-ray disks. Did Corel take burning disks and necessarily .iso disk images of any sort completely out of the share page for the X8 Pro version? And then charge to supply?

I found out the hard way that Titler EX does not support Intel integrated graphics. :(
