VS 8.5 - what's that?

Post by Snake11 »

Hi,

what is a difference between Corel VS 8 and VS 8.5? Until this year I thought corel realeases only full number version. Does it mean that version 8 is bad quality version?

Very interesting, they added NewBlue TitlerEX*.
There was a request for that in the past. So Corel do listen...
I had the chance of testing it about a year ago, I found it much friendlier than Boris.
I guess we can smell what to expect in X9.

could it be a local update?

Although Corel do usually only issue full number versions we have had a half before - we did at one time have a version 11.5

the release of an X8.5 does NOT mean that X8 is a bad version - X8.5 will just add improvements to X8

typical of Corel to release information in dribs and drabs at different websites across the world at different times

we may well get news of a patch soon for those using X8 to upgrade to X8.5

Hopefully that might be the case. But given Corel's penny pinching with the trial version of X8, cutting out anything that involved a licence fee, I am concerned that the licence fee payable to NewBlue for Titler would be unlikely to persuade Corel to provide the upgrade free to existing users.

Moreover, I am wondering which version of Titler they are including. As some may know, versions 2.0 was recently released and as a stand-alone costs a good deal more than Video Studio itself!

Yes, it seems I have to eat my hat since they included Titler and MyDVD. Mind you, Titler is still version 1. The addition of MyDVD is also interesting. It is of course a Roxio program, though Corel now owns Roxio too and indeed brands this version as "VideoStudio MyDVD" under the Corel sign.

MyDVD is a stand-alone authoring program which can produce DVDs, AVCHD hybrid discs and Blu-Ray. But there does not appear to be any internal link within VS to open a VS project in MyDVD. In other words, you would need to produce compatible files for these discs in VS, then open MyDVD and insert them there to author a disc -- which is out preferred workflow in any case. It also has a somewhat different layout to the burning module in VS, and comes in two modes "Magic" and "Advanced"... The availability of disc templates also appears to be limited, with only 10 available for any of the discs. But at least it is free and gets around the silly decision Corel took with X8 to charge extra for the disc burning capacity.

BTW, the version number for X8.5 is 18.5.0.23.

MyDVD appeared first with Pinnacle Studio 18. As far as I can see it is exactly the same programme.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

myDVD has been part of Roxio Creator for almost 10 years. Before then it was a Sonic Solutions product.

Is Corel starting to merge VideoStudio, Roxio and Pinnacle?

Brian, what issues were fixed?

** quick report on the update.
- MyDvd didn't install on XP, I guess as it need .net4.5 and it's not for XP.
- Update on 7 got my heart looses a pulse as VS crashed 2 times, only 3rd try opened it.
- MyDVD on 7 load OK, great improvement for us in the levant as it support Unicode
TitlerEx is 1.0 (as it is the same embedded version from some time) but it's powerful enough to give that extra twist. You need to register it with e-mail (I hope it will let me register on XP and7 ** it went OK)

I have no idea what issues were fixed - that was the only indication I found of what the update contained.

Corel used to supply more detail when they issued a patch - but they seem to announce just the minimum now.

** I didn't watch it yet

:? Sorry guys, VSX8.5 keep crashing on me trying to render just sample clip with one EX title.
Same on XP and on 7 about 10% into it.

Open my zip, there is the EX project, when in EX load it on SP-V01.mp4 and render to mp4

Downloaded - unzipped - loaded into NB over SP-V01.mp4

plays perfectly - I see "try one more time" - with no errors or crashes.

I activated my NB plug-in - don't know if that makes the difference or not
