On VideoStudio X7 m2ts file hangs on editing

I wanted to edit an hour long m2ts file in X7. I can import the file successfully, but in the edit mode X7 hangs. In addition the audio is missing. On the same machine I can use a 2011 version of Arcsoft Total Media Theatre to successfully import, edit and render the same file. My processor is an i7-5820K with 16 GB of memory. I prefer the user interface of X7 over Arcsoft. It seems incongruous that X7 should under perform a much older product. Other posts on this forum suggest a possible driver problem, but since the Arcsoft product runs OK and my nVidia drivers are up to date, this seems not to apply in my case.

Although your GT220 is very basic I don't think its the culprit, I'm using driver 267 where the current is 306.
(you invested into i7-5820K + 16GB and peanuts on the GPU?)
Where this m2ts came from? how did you load it into your computer?

Sorry, my profile was outdated. I've updated it. (It's been a long time since I posted on this board). My GPU is GeForce 760. The m2ts file came directly from a PVR.

I have just downloaded the trial version of Cyberlink PowerDirector 13. It has none of the problems I am experiencing with VS X7. It handles the m2ts file fine in editing including audio. Unless I find there is an obvious fix to the X7 problem I will be switching after being a "loyal customer" of Corel since version X3.

Can you please right click on the file in the VS library window i.e. before trying to do any editing to it, and then choose Properties. Please copy ALL Properties here, or take a screen grab of the Properties box and upload it here as an Attachment. Then at least we will have a better idea of exactly what your PVR produces.

Well I can't think of what might be going wrong in X7. On the face of it, that is stock standard AVCHD footage, which X7 can certainly usually handle. I can't even think of anything to suggest! Is there any particular type of editing which causes VS to hang, or is it any editing at all? Given that your video is one solid block an hour long, that is a big file. Are you certain VS is actually hanging, or it is simply taking its time to apply/show edits? I have often found that after applying some edits to AVCHD, my computer (which is not as powerful as yours) simply sits there and appears to have stopped working. But if I give it time, go away and make a cup of coffee, I come back and find it is working again and the edits have been applied.

Thanks for your reply. The program hangs almost at the very beginning of my attempt to edit. If I press play for example the playback starts--without any audio--and then suddenly stops. Even if I wait awhile it sometimes comes back then hangs again. What is disturbing is that the identical file works fine on both the Cyberlink software and the much older ArcSoft program. I have successfully edited .MTS files and .MP4 files on VS X7. I have even uninstalled X7 and reinstalled it along with the service package, but it still hangs. Even though as you say the file is quite large, there are no delays on the other two packages when I go to the edit mode on them.

Have you tried changing the extension from .m2ts to .mts as they are in fact identical in Properties. (MTS is what is usually in the camera original, and it becomes .m2ts usually when transferred to the computer.) I suspect changing it to mp4 might not work since, while some video using the mp4 extension is in fact also AVCHD (see for example footage from the GoPro Hero range), not all mp4 is AVCHD.

I really suspect it is the length of the file -- although I note (and agree with) you comment about other software handling it with ease. Have you experimented with making a copy of the file and cutting off a bit and trying that in VS? If it works, then as I say I would suspect it is the length which is causing VS to choke. If not, then it is obviously something else, such as a tag embedded in the video which for some reason VS does not "like"...

Thanks for the attempts to help solve this problem. In the interests of time efficiency I've decided to switch to CyberLink since it handles the m2ts files effortlessly. Trying to get X7 to work seems to be a time sink.
