Failed to open DVD. Report ID: 0x800408ff(2303)
I have version 2.5 of movie factory but want to upgrade so I have installed version 4 trial. But I keep getting an error when I want to import data from a dvd. The error is "failed to open dvd. report id: 0x800408ff(2303)", I'm really stumped since the old version was able to import from the DVD! Anyone have an answer as I don't want to pay for an upgrade if it doesn't work for me.
Thanks
Neil

Providing your not trying to import copy-protected material:
(You will receive a similar message if it's a commercial dvd).
(It will also say CSS protected disk).
But since you can import using a previous version of MF the material isn't copy-protected.
I have found a work-around to this error message on my system(s).
This error is showing up trying to import dvd-ram disks made on a panasonic dvd recorder.
I believe the error may be because my dvd reader is only a reader and not a dvd-ram writer.
The same holds true for dvd-rw's in -vr format. With those disks you can get an error at the
end of importing but if you click to keep the imported material it's still on the harddisk and you
manually import the movie.
The dvd importing module for MovieFactory 4 was rewritten and has additional features over previous
versions. As far as I know ulead is aware of this message and is working on the problem. The new feature
is you can import the complete movie on the dvd unlike previous versions that broke the movie into
separate mpeg2 files for each chapter. So the new module can import the complete movie or you can
select separate chapters only to import.
This is the workaround that I've been using running XP Home:
"Share the dvd-reader allowing full access and map a drive letter to it."
Then import the dvd from the new mapped drive letter.
An alternate method would be to mount(share) the dvd from another
computer in your network and then map your computer to that
shared dvd (on the other machine).
You need to be familiar with the built in features of windows networking to do this. Windows networking
also needs to be enabled to perform this. Step by step commands for the graphical interface for
sharing/mapping are hard to explain on a forum.
Hope this helps,

It is something that ulead has to address with the changes in the
importing of dvd's (non-copyprotected).
It would help if you posted what your dvd reader is.
The model and make. If you don't have that can you post
whether your trying to read the dvd in a read-only device or
a device that can also burn dvd's.

I use DVD-RW, LG model GSA-4163B, for both reading and burning DVD.maddrummer3301 wrote:It is something that ulead has to address with the changes in the

When I used MF3.5 it didn't have this error but when I changed to MF4 the problem occured.
Moreover, the Ulead Video Studio v9.0 got the problem, too.

I will later post how to share & remap to the drive using windows networking.
That is a temporary workaround until a patch is released.
It's been working on my system(s).
I have already written the instructions but when I posted them
I'm having trouble putting spaces in the commands. The spaces are
removed and someone wouldn't be able to understand the command.
Not sure how to fix the posting problem.

Solution for me
I have found the cause of my error. The DVD I was using had not been finalised as I was still using it for filming. Anyway, I decided to finalise the disk and voila, no error importing the data!
I hope this may be of use to others with this problem.

Your first post as you stated:
>>>>I'm really stumped since the old version was able to import from the DVD
I guess you weren't trying to import the SAME DVD correct?
Your first post sounded to me like version 2.5 would import the dvd and version 4 wouldn't.
Otherwise that doesn't make sense, but it would make sense if it were the same DVD.
Could you please post back and verify this?
Trying to find out why errors are being generated when importing in the new module.

The error:
report id: 0x800408ff(2303) is obviously an error generated when
a disk cannot be read but it also appears that there can be many
reasons why. It is MF4 because MF3 imports no problem at all.
I've been importing disks from various recorders for quite some time now.
Some of my dvd's come up with that error and also stating CSS disk
which is a copy-protected disk. But they aren't copy-protected.

Failed to open DVD
I'm getting the same error. I just started using DVD Movie Factory after getting a new cam corder. I had version 3.0 installed and it imported fine there but couldn't process the dolby audio format. SO I upgraded to 4.0 and now get the error trying to import the same DVD. I can open the old 3.0 project in 4.0 and everything works fine. I don't want to keep two versions installed because one doesn't work correctly. I also already uninstalled 3.0 and the disc is in limbo. Hopefully, Ulead fixes the error.

Hi,
First make sure to download & install the latest update to MF4 from the
ulead website.
You can try copying the contents of the DVD_RTAV folder to the harddisk and import from the harddisk.
If your recording using a DVD+RW disk then that would be writing the +VR format and MF4 with the latest updates has a problem with them.
Make sure you finalize the DVD in the recorder before trying to import
into the computer.
If your recording to DVD-RW there are 2 modes to use, the -VR mode or the DVD-Video mode. Both modes still need to finalize the dvd-rw disk
in order for other equipment to read the dvd(s). Same for DVD-R dvd's.
The only dvd that doesn't need to be finalized is a DVD+RW disk.
When you eject the disk the recorder will finalize and update the disk making it playable in comsumer equipment. They are written in the +VR format and I've found that MF4 is having a problem with them.
(Reported this problem to ulead tech support).
Hope this helps,
