VS X8 Pro crashes when I add and shorten clip w/screenshots

Post by paulkurucz »

Hi,

When I add a clip - any clip - to a certain point in my project and try to shorten it, VS X8 Pro 64 crashes. All the time. I have tried a hard reboot of my computer. I have done several projects with VSX7 and VSX8, and while there are random crashes, this is a problem I simply can't seem to fix.

Screenshots of crash attached.

Thoughts?!?

Thanks!

Paul

I see it's .mov and mp3.
So check your quicktime and your mp3 codec, better convert it to wav.

When you say "a certain point" is that just a figure of speech or do you mean that the crash occurs when you edit in just one particular part of the project in the timeline but that you can carry out the insert and trim elsewhere in the timeline without problems.

Yes! Exactly at the point on the timeline seen in the screenshot. Not elsewhere in the timeline. I have tried replacing the images and clips before and after the spot, just to be sure it was not them causing the problem...

Thanks for the reply. I can certainly convert the sound files to .wav in Audacity, but how do I "check" my Quicktime codec? I get the .mov files from the videographer, so have no control over the video format. Should I request another video format that VS prefers?

Your screenshot shows that there is a transition close to where the problem is - Videostudio will throw a problem if you try to trim the video it is applied to to less than the length of the transition - that is if the transition is 2 seconds long any video clip it "transists"! must be longer than 2 seconds.

could that be the problem

Check your quicktime version by opening the quicktime player and choosing "Help >> about quicktime"

This is a follow-up from my original posting on crashes when working on clips.

I found the problem: Ripple editing

When ripple editing is turned on for the main video track, there tends to be more crashes - and more consistent crashes - than when ripple editing is turned off.

Some Video Studio "hygiene" suggestions that can help minimize crashes:

1. Always use a clean, new project. Due to the repeating nature of my video projects, I tend to want to "save as" my projects and then replace key clips. Don't do this if you can help it. Start with a clean, blank project where any links are not going to various folders that you might change location, files are moved out of, etc. For example, I use a white image file placeholder to allow me to do "fade to white". But if that file is moved and VS wants to access it but can't, I get a crash.

Why not use the "Export as Template" feature you might ask? It has never worked for me - literally. So buggy that I gave up and went to "save as". Same problem: There is a file "linking" problem inherent in VS that causes a lot of crashes.

2. Put all your video, audio, and image files - everything for your project, in other words - into the same folder that you save your project file into. Even if you have to make copies of some files. This avoids some file linking problems.

3. Don't turn ripple editing on until you have put all your key pieces onto the main video track and have clipped them.

I discovered these through trial and error. If anyone else has any VS hygiene suggestions, please share! Thanks!

Paul
