Custom Hotkeys

Post by the27man »

I am looking for a way to customize hotkeys (or locate ones that have gone missing).

Perhaps I have queried the wrong terms, but I cannot locate a means of modifying my hotkeys. If you can point me to an existing thread that addresses this issue, please assist.

Two hotkeys in specific that I sincerely miss from X7 are the "Keep Aspect Ratio" and "Fit To Screen". In X7, you could right-click in the preview pane while the clip was selected and simply click "K" or "F"; now it is required to scan the dropdown menu and click on the desired command (or abandon the mouse to click "Enter" after toggling through the various "Fit..." options). While this works, it is now an added step which leads to more time and the occasional erroneous selection which adds even more time.

I work with a lot of GoPro footage shot in 960, so defaulting my import setting to "Fit to Screen" does not save steps as it still requires me to fix the aspect ratio. Otherwise, this would be a dandy solution most of the time.

There are also a number of other scenarios where I think it would be nice to have custom hotkeys assigned to prevent the need to mouse back and forth between the Preview pane (to, say, nudge the position of a clip) and the Track pane (to advance forward or backward to compare). (I shan't present more examples as I'm sure we could all write novels on the subject.)

If there is no "solution" to this particular issue, I will take solace in knowing that the software errs to the "streamlined" rather than the "bloated".

I cannot manage to make the K and F keys work the way you have described in X7 - for me K returns to the start of the project and F advances one frame at a time - as described in the user manual.

Unless you are an accomplished computer user who knows how to modify the various parts of the actual programme files then there are no user modifications available in VideoStudio to modify any of the keyboard shortcuts as defined the the user guide.

if you use the top video track and set your project properties correctly then VideoStudio automatically 'fits to screen' and 'keeps aspect ratio' without further input.

(I wrote a reply, was sidetracked, and was signed out of the forum, so I will try to reiterate my amazingly insightful, informative, and witty post.)

I omitted a critical element to my initial post. I will outline the steps to recreate my means of using F (in X7) to obtain the functions of which I spoke. (The K key has resumed functionality, so I'm not sure what happened there.)

1. Place a video clip into one of the overlay tracks in the Timeline panel.
2. Move you cursor over the preview in the Player panel and right-click. [This should present a dropdown menu (or drop-list in Corel vernacular) with various options.]
3. Strike the F key.

In my X7, striking the the F key resizes the clip to Fit to screen.

In X8, striking the F key highlights the "Fit to Screen" option in the drop-list; striking again toggles the highlight to the next selection, "Fit to Width", and again for "Fit to Height". At this point, I must strike the Enter key once my desired selection in highlighted. Alternatively, I can mouse over the selection and select it, but that's what I'm trying to bypass.

I completely understand that this is a "First World Problem", so I'm not terribly put out, but I have grown accustomed to certain amenities of such a privileged existence: soda preferences, GPS, grooming options.
