Importing video with VS X8

Post by Weeination »

Lata and Ken may recall my previous thread regarding my audio problems with XS 10.
The last thing I posted on that thread was how I am getting better results
with a new computer along with VideoStudio X8 Pro.

A couple of weeks after that posting I wanted to make system recovery discs.
Therefore I set the hard drive back to its factory settings.

Of course I then needed to reinstall Pro X8 which I finally got around to doing today.

On this new installation I was unable to imported the DVDs recorded on my Panasonic
DVD recorders. I was getting an error message saying "Invalid file type".

I then uninstalled X8 and reinstalled it again. Once again I am able to import
the videos from my Panasonic recorded DVDs.

I don't know why I was unable to import the video from the DVDs on that second last installation.
The only thing I did was change the location for the Working Folder on the screen Import from Digital Media.
I changed the location from the initial location of C:\Users\My Name\Videos to within the
X8 Pro folder in Program Files if that matters.

In the past with VS 9 & 10 I have always tried to keep all of my files related to VS in the Program
Files folder.

On this last installation I just kept the same location
for that working folder on the screen Import from Digital Media.

This all reminded me of the recommendation both Ulead and Corel have made for VideoStudio over the years.

They say in the manuals and I think I read on the this forum as well that if you have two hard drives that
you should install VideoStudio on the C drive and any captured (imported) files along with any videofiles
should be stored on the second drive.

With this new computer I now have two hard drives so my questions are as follows.

One is an explanation for the reason for this recommendation, to put all of the video on a different hard drive
if one is available? I would think that it would make more sense to keep all of the
files related to VideoStudio in one folder, the program files folder.

If I keep all of my video on the D drive then of course I need change the Working Folder from
Settings/Preferences from C: Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\18.0\ to a folder on the D drive?

Should I change the location of the working folder in the Import from Digital Media
screen from C:\Users\My Name\Videos to a location on the D drive. I assume the change I made after the second
last installation was not the reason why I was unable to import my Panasonic recorded DVDs.

Also in settings/preferences there is an Audio folder with its default location at
Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\18.0\VoiceOver\. I guess that should also be moved to the D drive?

Is it best to have all of these folders as sub-folders within
one larger VS X8 folder on the D drive?

Not just for VS but to all programs it's good housekeeping to keep the data on separate folder/drive.
My VS is not on C but on G and the videos are on E.
Reading video files is more demanding than reading software files hence the need for a different pipe.

The usual reason for the recommendation to put data files on a different drive to your programme files is to keep your 'C' drive free - it is the drive where your computer "works" and so needs to have plenty of room to do so - some people - like asik - even move programme files away from C to keep as much free space as possible on C

I use a combination of internal and external hard drives to store my videos - but I always start a new folder for each new project and use that as my working folder - and audio temp folder - and when you get to the Share tab to send files from there to - also send the .vsp project files and music used in the project there.

I do not store videos in the Program folder but usually in 'My Videos' - doing that allows me to store all my video work in the same folder and sub-folder as I often use more than one programme when working on videos and stills to go in them - so that if I am working on "My Holiday 2015" I only have to go to that folder for all videos/stills/backgrounds/music etc used in that project.

There is a very slight drawback to using removable external hard drives - which I do to allow me to easily move projects between computers - and that is that occasionally Windows allocates a different drive letter to the HDD when you plug it in - then you get a re-link error - only takes a couple of minutes to relink though especially if everything in the project is in the one folder
