Video Capture Device

Post by novice »

I have a Sony Handycam DVD203.

I've downloaded the Trial Version 9. When I go to Capture the video. I get an error message saying that there is not a "video capture device".

After I retry it gives me a window that says "errors have been generated" and is shutting down.

Is there a separate "video Capture Device" I need? I didn't see anyhting when I looked at "system requirements" for the software.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You do not need to "Capture" via any sort of cable from a DVD camera - please follow these instructions :-

Finalise the disc in your camcorder then take the mini disc out of your camera and put it in the DVD tray of your PC - take care to centralise it in the special depression.

open UVS at the edit stage and either :-

1. Click on "File" then "Import Media file to timeline" then click on "Insert DVD/DVD-VR" then browse to the VIDEO_TS folder on your Disc - select it and follow instructions and your video will appear in the timeline.

2. OR - - - RIGHT click in the timeline and from the pop-up which appears choose "Insert DVD/DVD-VR" then browse to the VIDEO_TS folder on your Disc - select it and follow instructions and your video will appear in the timeline.

3. OR - - - In the very bottom left corner is a little round icon with an opening folder on it - click on it and from the pop-up which appears choose "Insert DVD/DVD-VR" then browse to the VIDEO_TS folder on your Disc - select it and follow instructions and your video will appear in the timeline.

Thanks for the response Brian.

I should have more fully defined my situation to begin with.

The reason I want to caprtue the video from the recorder is because I don't have a DVD player on my PC.

If possible I would like to "capture" the video from the camera, edit the video then save them as video files on my hardrive.

Possible????

Thanks

Hello Novice,

....I think we all start out with that pseudonym..

In answer to your question... Yes, In theory you should be able to transfer the video from your camera to the PC via a USB 2.0 port. The OS should see it as a removeable mass storage device. You will possibly need to install some software that came with the camera, so have it handy. Switch on both camera and PC... and when booted up.. plug in the USB cable. If you are running Windows XP it should detect the new hardware and install device driver software or invite you to insert the software disk that was supplied with the camera..UVS should also be able to detect it and it will be listed as a source under Tools/select device control/current device. You should not need to have your video disk finalised in order to capture in this way... But first.... read your camera manual. It should amply explain all this in there somewhere...

Hope this helps

Hello again

I have rethought the last posting that I made, and revise the theory as follows... If Windows detects your camera as a mass storage device... ie a removable disk, you would expect to be able to use Import DVD in UVS, and browse/navigate to the drive (your camera) and select the video file for insertion into the timeline.. Again, if this is possible, it should be explained in your camera manual..

George, thank you for your responses. My computer does see it as a mass storage device so I expected to be able to import the DV. This is where I got the message saying I needed a video capture device or that it is not connected. (At the time of this message, my computer was seeing the camera as a mass storgage device).

I'm going to try it on a different/newer computer to see if I get the same results.

Thank you again.

Don't click on "Capture". Click on the button in the lower-left corner of the UVS window that has a folder on it -- that will bring up a menu with the "Insert DVD / DVD-VR..." option.
