Hi Im a novice and trying the paint shop pro X7. How do you know what size objects layers etc are? It might sound naive but I have not a clue

I'm not sure how you intend to use this information so this may not help, but Shift +I will give you information about the size of the image overall. Not sure about the size of a particular layer.

There is no feature that I know of that gives the full size of a single vector object, or of a vector layer, or any layer actually.

But there are a few things you can do.

If it's a rectangle or ellipse you can just select the object and use the edit mode from those tools to find out what size they are. If it's an odd shape then, with a vector object selected you can grab the pick tool, then grab the upper left corner to find its current pixel position. Next grab the lower right corner to grab it's pixel position. Finally do a little math to determine the size.

It would also be possible to create a script that could calculate the size of a layer.

Another option would be to copy a layer and then paste it as a new image. The new image size would tell you the layer size.

It is a little complicated.

I use Pick (K) tool to draw "selection" around all items I want in layer, to calculate size.
Then I do copy and next paste as a new image.

Yep tried it, I also used gridlines but to be frank its a pain

Yep but its a pain like I said. If I want create a layer or even just a square that I need to b a specific size it seems a bit silly to have to do that everytime

I'm not sure why you would need an entire layer to be a specific size. But if you just need a rectangle of color that's a specific size, use the rectangle preset shape tool. You can set the width and height easily. Make sure "Create on vector" is turned off unless you want it to remain a vector.

Drag out any rectangle, doesn't matter. Once the rectangle is on the canvas you can manually enter the width and height of the rectangle on the tool options palette. When ready, hit the "OK" checkmark to accept the change. It creates a raster rectangle on the layer that you had selected at the time.

Then all you have to do is make sure that anything you draw, remains within that rectangle.

Another option is to do the same thing, but leave the rectangle as a vector so it can be resized. Then simply place it underneath the layer you're working on so that you can remain within the boundries. As a vector you can resize it for every layer.

Yeah, you'll need to use PhotoLine to get that functionality. It has a Layer Properties palette that not only displays the layer info, but also lets you specify precise values for size, position and rotation by typing in the exact values.

Yes, I think it can be eeeeeasily done...
