Typographic Art

Post by Ivan Mauger »

Does anyone know of any Typography tutorials for Paint Shop Pro? I would like one for the image below which has been created using Photoshop. There are other styles of the art and any tutorials for them would be appreciated. Thanks for any help given.

Thanks for your reply, Jean-Luc. The tutorial I found is an attempt to copy 'Grammy's Typographic Posters', but is a Photoshop tutorial that won't work in PSP. I'm hoping the link below works, if it doesn't Google 'Typographic Portrait like Grammy’s Posters'.

Thank you for the link. It works perfect.
All what is explained is reproductible in PaintShop Pro.
Just a matter of layers, brushes, etc.

I don't know a tutorial for PSP but you will be able to do the steps in PaintShop Pro because this PS tutorial doesn't use PS specific tools.

If I had time, I would certainly try to write such tutorial but sorry, I'm also active on French forums and I'm very busy.
Perhaps someone here will give you some tips, tricks and advice...
:D

Jean-Luc what did you use for he Midtone and Shadow selections? What commands and settings?

There are numerous options but I'm curious what you chose?

Thanks for your interest, Jean-Luc, I'd be interested to read your answers to LeviFiction's questions. As you say, perhaps someone can come up with a few ideas. I've just realised, I'm sitting on my sofa chatting to a man from Belgium and one from America. How times have changed, in my younger days we'd have had to be pen pals and this conversation would have taken weeks. :wink:

Duplicate the layer (original image).
On the duplicated layer, apply :
-> Effets
-> Artistic effects
-> Posterize
-> Levels : 3
You get this:
PS posterize.jpg
Duplicate the color posterized layer.
On this second duplicated layer, apply :
-> Adjust
-> Hue and saturation
-> Colorize
-> Hue and Saturation both to zero
You get this :
PS posterize bw.jpg
Remove all white pixels from the black and white image.
As I didn't remember how to do it, I saved this layer only as new image, PNG format, tab Transparency, single color transparency, areas that match pure white checked, Tolerance 4.
This creates an image with transparency in place of the white pixels.
Import this PNG image as new layer as top layer.
Close the Visibility of the intermediate layers and let only the first original layer visible (bottom) and the top layer (with transparency).
You get this :
PS posterize bw_color.jpg
Not exactly the same as with PS but I think this could do the job.

To remove white you could have used magic wand to select all white and deleted it. Or you could have used layer blend ranges (blend if in Photoshop). Could have also created a mask from the opacity and inverted it, merging the group. One of those fun "thousand ways to do it" kind of things. Which ever you find easiest.

Nice work around Jean-Luc.

Thanks to you both for your input and interest. I've managed to achieve Jean-Luc's image, now for the rest of the tutorial. Although I've had PSP since version PSPX I've never taken it too seriously, now I'm retired I'm getting into it more. I'm enjoying it, but it takes a some time to learn. Thanks again.

I like this very much and would like to give it a try in PSP and if confident enough, write a tutorial.

That would be great, trueblue. There are other types of Typographic Art, just Google it and you'll find many examples.

Many thanks to trueblue/Maureen for writing a tutorial that has enabled me to produce the picture below. It's a first attempt so it isn't perfect. I hope Cheryl Cole won't mind me using her as a model. Have a look at Maureen's site, the link is a couple of posts back. There are many more tutorials to be seen there and is well worth a visit.
