Magic Fill

Post by rtwigley »

I've been using PSP for years now.. Probably 10 or more. Never had an issue. I was excited about the whole magic fill thing. Saves a lot of time. I used the 30 day trial thing, never could get the magic fill to work. Thought, well, maybe when I upgrade. Just upgraded, working on my first pic. Took about 5 minutes to "process" and once it was done, nothing. Same photo. What gives? Anyone else have this issue??

Depends what you mean about not working.
Although they call it "Magic Fill" if there are other objects near the object you are trying to remove, then part of that other object may appear.
Taking a simple object of say a stone on a sandy beach, selecting all the stone with almost any method and then applying the Magic fill, it works well and is still working well in X7 SP3 on Xp machine.
Almost instantaneous in the case of a 300 x 300 pixel part in a 2000 x 1500 pixel image.
With "problems" it helps if you can show some examples list steps you are doing, mention sizes of images if there is a delay in processing.

In this case, I am working on a person on front of a bridge. In the background, there are two people off to the side who photo bombed it. They are smallish, and it is minimal, compared to some of the samples . Currently, I am on my phone and do not have the photo to attach. But, as I said before, I have yet to get it to work with any photos. I couldn't even get it to remove a no smoking sign behind a team photo that was on a wall before. I just wanted to see how it worked.

Ahh then the problem is in your understanding of what magic fill does. For an isolated object on a fairly uniform background it works well
eg, an out of place object on a lawn, beach. post against a bushy background.
It works because it randomly takes samples of the background in many different directions from the object and copies them to the objects location.
Experiment with it on some artificially created series of objects and backgrounds and learn its advantages and limitations

In the cases you have stated
person on bridge and photobombers - it would remove the bombers but probably place some sections of the person there as well.
team photo and sign - it would replace the sign with some parts of the team members .
I think it needs a method of masking, to be able to select what you want removed and then be able to paint what should not be used to replace it .

No, I get what you think I'm thinking lol. In the case of the sign, I used a segment of the wall around it, and nothing ever happened. I didn't just select the wall. With the photo bombers, I selected them, as well as the brush around them. Maybe there is a service pack or something I am missing or something.

Good idea to post a picture I think.
THe magic fill fills the selected area with parts outside the selected area, so not sure what selecting the wall was supposed to do.
The point I am making is that you cannot at present control what sections it uses to fill in the selected area.

The most recent version is 17.3.0.30. If you are missing a service pack you can find them here http://forum.corel.com/EN/viewtopic.php ... 19#p301319

Here is a video that explains how to use Magic Fill https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzykfDHrouc

If you are using it correctly and it still is not working, you could try resetting your workspace as that sometimes solves any number of corruption issues. If you have customized your workspace be sure to save it before doing the reset.

Instructions for resetting the workspace can be found here http://howto.corel.com/en/c/Resetting_P ... figuration

They reference X6 but work the same for X7.

Hope this helps.

Just so we are familiar with what the magic fill does and cannot do I have prepared a couple of images which consists of a background of coloured letters and an object of blacknumbers with a 2 pixel black outline.
Select the numbered area with whatever selection method you prefer and use the magic fill. Repeat with the Magic fill and you will see that it appears to randomise its selection areas and the exact effect is not repeatable.
